It took Rebecca an hour to trek her way downtown. Her feet ached and she needed a drink of water – or something stronger – but knew every step was worth it as a sign that read “24/7 CHINESE TAKEOUT” blinking red over a sad cripple of a brick building came into view. As she neared the shabby restaurant she nodded to two young men who were lingering outside the door. One of them looked at her wide-eyed, while the other said, “Fuck, you're still alive.” Then he pulled out his wallet and handed the guy next to him a twenty dollar bill.
Rebecca grinned at them both as she watched the exchange before heading through the door. ”Nice to see you assholes too.”
A little bell above the door jingled as she entered what was supposed to be a Chinese takeout. Instead the chefs were gone, and the narrow space was empty save for a woman sitting on a table as though it were a throne, talking with three other men who wore identical outfits of black shirts and jeans, and a petite young woman with unruly blonde hair. As the blonde looked up and saw Rebecca's face, she seemed to buckle into herself with relief.
“MARIA!”
Rebecca winced as she was called that name, the name that she had to use to keep this girl and others she cared about safe. As the girl, Eva, hurried over to Rebecca and embraced her, Rebecca made a promise in her heart to tell Eva her real name soon. “Hey, angel. Miss me?” She ruffled the girl's already wild tangle of hair and then looked over to Kin, the woman sitting on the table in the center of the restaurant.
Kin was the brightest thing in the room. Though the city was being torn down, she looked perfectly composed in a long jade-green cheongsam and her dark hair tied messily up with golden chopsticks. Her eyes were cold as she looked over Rebecca, then she smiled slightly as she eyed Rebecca's outfit. “Where the hell have you been?” Rebecca took in a breath and walked over to Kin. Her three guards backed away, knowing that Rebecca would never harm their mistress. ”It's a very long story and I'm way too goddamn sober to talk about it now. But I need a favor, Kin,” she said as she pulled out the mod soul's capsule from her pocket. ”I need a body.”
Rebecca watched as Kin's eyes widened in surprise. Then the former shinigami reached out and took the capsule from her, and examined it in the light. “Where did you get this?” Rebecca smiled and shrugged. ”The same place you find all your shit. In a gutter.” Kin gave Rebecca a rare smile, then turned and walked into the kitchen. Rebecca followed, but reeled as she saw that the kitchen had been converted into a surgery. Blood was smeared on the floor, and on various utensils laid on a fold-up table. On the kitchen counter a body of a young man, stripped of everything but his pants, lay still as stone. His face was pale and unmoving, and there were fresh stitches patching his chest together.
“Took a bullet to the chest earlier. We patched him up, but seems like his body just gave out,” said Kin, so matter-of-fact that it made Rebecca grimace. Then Kin handed the capsule to Rebecca. “Let's say hello to our new friend, then. Put it in his mouth.” Rebecca nodded and walked over to the body. Then she pushed the pill into the corpse's lips, tilted its head back, and made it swallow its new life.
