The tiny letter scrawled on a scrap of parchment sat folded in the pocket of her black vest. Its details had been read and reread a countless amount of times, questions regarding the scrawl rising every time she pulled it out. Even then, she did not hesitate to follow through with the instructions she had been given by the anonymous hand, and awaited whomever it was who summoned her with one hand on the hilt of her sword.
An eye for an eye.
What could that possibly mean? Carmen glanced towards the emptiness of the streets, scanning for any sign of movement and finding none. Her mind kept reciting the phrase, desperately trying to work out the connection it had to her. She kept coming up with nothing. Sleeplessness was also to blame for her agitation, for she had gotten little after the disappearance of her captain. She was trying to be strong for her division and for the Soutaichou, but there was only so much to be done. Carmen didn't even know if her diligence was something she herself preferred or if she was simply clinging to some hope that King would return to her and all would be righted.
The longevity of his absence had waned her patience, and her own wishes were soon beginning to clash with those of the Soul Society. Holding out for any longer when war was imminent was something that plagued her relentlessly, her mind only shifting from the thought of having to lead a division through conflict when a certain slip of paper slid quietly into her room. The message was even more haunting than her own preoccupations.
An eye for an eye, an eye for an eye, an eye for an eye. She waited alone, the phrase rolling back and forth like ocean waves.
