There were so many more humans around these days. Fleur still remembered the days when even the biggest cities only had a few thousand citizens, and kind of fondly at that. It had gotten pretty annoying lately, when even at night, a woman could not throw a stone without hitting at least three people. From a purely logical point of view, this should actually be a reassuring thing, given that her food supply was quite secure like this. This many human meant a stable stock, and an environment where the occasional missing human did not truly matter, despite all those advances in information technology. At the same time, though, it made finding a single person in a big city so incredibly annoying. Even someone as prominent as this girl. The only survivor of a fire, in an orphanage no less – something the public was quick to ultimately forget about, but also something that caused records, which in turn could be found. And given that researching this kind of thing was pretty much Fleur’s current occupation, she had gotten good enough at it to at least suspect something to be up with that girl. It might just be a fluke, but if that weird human who’d claimed to have fathered a child with a bount was to believed, one of the orphans from back then could possibly have the gene. Or whatever it was, really. There still was a lot of debate about this kind of thing, but it might just be one of those genes discovered by humans. They apparently made up everything biological, although that did not necessarily had to be linked to them, as a race. Fleur shook her head. That was not important at the moment. While she was kind of a scientific person, most of her methods were still a bit old-fashioned, and she left all that sequencing and whatever to those paid to do it. This here was more about the good old deductive reasoning and following leads, not anything else. And latter leads led to the lefthand ladder. Ah, alliteration was something fun. Okay, the ladder was unimportant, but it was to her left, so that was just fine as well. Hiding in an alley was annoyingly boring as was, without such small, upbeat things to do. Either way, the elder bount kept on leaning on a wall, while her doll, currently posing as a green-haired woman, was waiting around the corner. Searching for one of those humans in this city had proven too annoying, hence this setup. If her information was correct, she’d have to come around here, and if someone matching photo and description appeared, her doll would begin to tail her, effectively trapping her between them. All while being quite loud on purpose, just so it became more obvious. |
