She was sitting alone yet again. The sun was beginning to set, casting a shadow upon the entirety of Seireitei. Carmen tucked a free-flying strand of black hair behind an ear, her other hand wrapped around the hilt of her blade. She scanned the premises once, twice, three times. To be truthful, she was expecting to be taken by surprise again but wanted to do all she could to prevent this from happening. A flicker of energy caught her attention, but the source was just an old woman on the other side of the street. Carmen watched the woman meekly, her mind reeling.
To say she had changed from the last time she had seen him was quite of an understatement. Carmen held herself proudly, her sword thrumming in her grip. Even her spiritual energy surrounded her in a different way. It clung to her warmly, washing the area in a strange haze when left to its own accord. Everything she felt reflected in this pressure. Right now, it was a soothing blend of contentment and relaxation. Zhi would come to her in this state, if he ever did show. She kept her senses on high alert, to catch him before he caught her.

“You’ve changed,” Zhi commented.
He turned the bend where the street curved around a building. As attentive as she was, she’d still find that his spiritual aura had slipped past her senses. But, unlike last time, he did not attempt to completely hide his presence. To those watching across the street or from the windows of their shops, Zhi was just an old shinigami missing an eye. There were thousands of those, though the old part often did not apply.
Zhi offered Carmen a warm smile when he reached her and held out his arm for her to take. It was uncharacteristic, and he knew this. After all, there were people watching him and Carmen, and a few of them had that uncanny ability to read auras.
Regardless of whether Carmen took his arm or not, Zhi looked at her sword. They were in wartime so carrying it was permitted, but there was a power thrumming from it that was unchecked. “How long did it take you?”

"In more ways than one." She remarked back.
Carmen watched him round the corner, a pleasant smile lighting her face. He looked different in the fading light, not as threatening. Then again, the last time she had seen him was in the pitch darkness of the night with a sword pressed to the back of her neck. Carmen did her best to act natural, to dissuade onlookers from pausing in their commute.
When he finally came to her, he returned her smile with his own, and offered her an arm. The gesture threw her off a bit, and her smile faltered ever so slightly. Even so, she took the arm he offered without hesitation, rising up whilst sheathing Sanzaru with her free hand.
"Two days. To awaken it, at least." She spoke casually, letting him guide her to wherever it was he planned to go. "Thank you. For helping me." Carmen added awkwardly after contemplating what to say next.
"I suppose it is time for me to return the favor?"
“Mm,” Zhi said. He did not respond to anything else he said, and lead her to a small tea shop that had empty lots on both sides.
When the two shinigami entered, Carmen was like to notice the danger present in such a place. The only patrons here were a couple of shinigami in the back corner, and as there were no lights in the room but a single lamp they were shrouded in darkness. At the back was a counter with no bartender.
Zhi broke away from Carmen and walked to the bar. His aura was rife with anger. “Do you know how I lost my eye, Alvaro-Fukutaichou?”
His arms spread along the leaf of the counter and he took in a deep breath. When Zhi turned to face her, there was a terrible darkness in his remaining eye.
“Do you have any idea of the history of the Seireitei?”

She watched him with confusion, walking a bit behind him as she lead her around. They came to a tea shop she could have sworn was closed, and entered in silence. He chose a seat by the abandoned bar, walking off and letting her arm slip from his. She followed him and took a seat beside the man, looking at him with suspicion. Something was amiss, she could feel it in the air.
A question regarding what was amiss nearly escaped from her lips before he interrupted her angrily. She didn't know how to respond to his strange inquiry, looking down at her hands awkwardly. "I'm afraid I do not, señor. Is it common knowledge?" Carmen hadn't believed it was which was why the question had caught her off guard.
His next one did as well. What was he getting at, exactly? "Of course I do." Carmen responded defensively. She held a vast knowledge of many things, the history of the Seireitei was something she had familiarized herself with long ago.

In one fluent motion, Zhi grabbed the eyepatch and ripped it off. Where an eye should be was a torn hole with a broken and jagged eyelid. The actual organ was gone, replaced by a darkness thankfully deepened by the perpetual dusk maintained within the tea shop. Still, someone as smart as Carmn could tell that the eye was long gone. There was almost no way to restore it.
“Kurosawa,” Zhi flashed stepped forward and slammed his hand into the table. His face was inches from Carmen’s own. “Kurosawa Keiji. The man I put into a hole to rot myself.
“Have you ever noticed my left hand lacks a ring finger, or that I walk with a limp? Has it ever occurred to you why I, a member of the Onmitsukidou with this much sway, was not Commander-in-Chief and why that bastard Seiryuu was? Did you ever think why you never knew who I was?
“It’s because that man you went to go visit inflicted wounds so deep that even Kawa Shimizu couldn’t fix them. That even the science of your division failed to mend them. And I put him into the Maggot’s Nest so that he would die a slow, agonizing, and maddening death.”
Zhi took a deep breath and backed away from the table. The wazikashi he had originally threatened her with weeks ago was lying on the table, sheathed. A single inch of steel, orange from the firelight, was bared. “You have five minutes to explain to me why you are trying to stab me in the back for assisting you, Carmen Alvaro. If you fail . . .”

Carmen had assumed he had lacked a second eye, ripping the patch off of his face in order to reveal what she already knew did little to shock her. She eyed it once before looking back at his good one with a raised brow. The purpose behind this meeting must have been one she had misunderstood. What she had thought was a follow-up seemed to be more of an interrogation-esque get together. Her suspicions were confirmed when Keiji's name was uttered.
"Yes, what about him, señor?" Still confused as ever, she tried to find a reason behind this outburst. Had she done something wrong? No, no she hadn't. At least nothing that anyone besides she and the subject in question knew about. Carmen had made sure to carefully hide any sort of evidence that her daily trips to visit the old fukutaichou were anything but that. Her meticulousness had prevented any sort of suspicion from arising, so in truth, she had no idea why these accusations were being spit in her face.
All of these questions lacked answers. They were all rhetorical, though, trying to get Carmen to see what she was doing from this man's perspective. "I haven't done anything to compromise your intentions, señor. Keiji is still rotting right now, as we speak." She reminded him. His outlandish final request caused a spark of anger to flare within her, but she only let it show in her dark eyes. Carmen hated being threatened. She always had. Such a tactic did little to make her cooperate fully. Why did he resort to this again?
"Explain what? I fail to see how I'm stabbing you in the back in any way." Shizaru's courage had given her an edge. Death didn't scare her anymore either. Experiencing it once had taken the edge off. "What of the deal? What do you want from me in return for helping me? Isn't that what this is about?"

“Let me tell you two useful pieces of information, Carmen Alvaro. First, do not take me for a fool. Two, do not think evidence is needed to prove guiltiness. There is no reason to visit Kurosawa Keiji. None. I do not care if you want to learn from him, you will learn from someone else. I do not care if he holds some secret you need, you will get it from someone else. Do not visit him again.”
Zhi took in a deep breath when he finished his rant and picked his eye patch up. He carefully put it back in its place, took in another deep inhale, and found his center. It had been a long while since he had been this angry. Carmen was either ignorant, stupid, or impossibly dangerous to not understand the implications of visiting a criminal whom the impromptu leader of the Onmitsukido had a personal vendetta against. None the less, if she did decide to visit him again then he’d interfere. There will be no surprises.
With a nod, the shinigami beside Carmen stood up, bowed to Zhi, and stepped out of the teashop. For now, the two were completely alone in the darkness and candlelight. The Uneitai-Gundanchou gave Carmen an unempathetic look.
