What a sudden shift from ease into concern. Kariya had just completed a brief meeting with Izumi, the third division vice-captain. And the results of the meeting had left him with a bitter taste in his mouth, it wasn't the fact that he was going into a mission on his off time, but it was that he had wanted to spend that time at the house with his newly christened family. These were the only few moments in his career that he could spend more time with the most important woman in his life, and again his responsibilities had to take precedence.

Kariya's newly bought house was nothing so dramatic and rich as the nobility, he personally did not believe in overspending on anything, but regardless, it was more than comfortable enough to raise a family in. A comfortable environment, enough rooms for several guests and any future children, a decently sized outdoors garden for hobbies and relaxing, and a neighborhood in one of the safest places in Soul Society. That was more than enough for Kariya. Perhaps in the future, if he and Haruna thought it would be better to move into a larger house, he would accept, but for now, entering into this new home was one of the happiest moments of his life. He twitched, he regretted accepting that mission from Izumi.

He inserted the soul key and entered the house, "Tadaima," He exclaimed, briefly wondering if Haruna was still working overtime on her duties. He hadn't assigned anything to for the last few days as it wasn't her shift just yet. Regardless, the captain didn't want to let their personal lives affect their work ethic, and he felt that Haruna didn't either. Stepping into the kitchen, Kariya began to organize some groceries which he had bought on the way back into the fridge and cabinets, before briefly looking over the house, "Haruna, are you home?"

The dull slamming of the knife could be heard as Haruna chopped lettuce into fine slices. Long since finished her duties, she had decided to return home early so that she could prepare a meal for Kariya. Humming to herself as she twirled around the kitchen, she was still very much excited about her recent marriage. She had always known she'd be married quite early in her life, but she had always prayed it be with someone she deeply cared for. The thought showed clear as day on her face, denoted by her wide grin. Haruna looked just like a newlywed wife with her hair tied back in a ponytail and a apron over top her lounging clothes. "I wonder if he'll like this? Maybe i should have asked what he'd like for dinner...." Musing to herself she rinsed the lettuce before opening the oven. The savory smell of baked roast wafted throughout the house. "W-wwhoa.... its hot," Haruna stammered as she fumbled with her grip before placing it atop the stove. Wiping her forehead she made her way to their bedroom to change, but as she walked down the hall she heard the sound of the door opening and Kariya's smooth voice.

"Okaerinasai! Just a sec dear."

Letting her hair down as she made her way back to the kitchen, she decided changing could wait. After all she didn't want him picking through dinner just yet. Watching him as he stored the groceries she walked up to Kariya and wrapped her slender arms over his shoulders and burying her face in his back. His scent was one she had well become accustomed to. It was a peculiar smell that was a mix of cologne and cigarettes, but it wasn't bad. "How was your day Kariya?" Haruna avowed in a soft tone.

The first thing that hit Kariya's nose as he entered was the smell of dinner. Upon inspection, Kariya noticed that the entirety of the kitchen had been skillfully put to work, there were no unorganized clumps of garden vegetables, the lettuce had been skillfully chopped and the array of ingredients used had been neatly assorted and prepared for their dinner. Perhaps it was because they were newlywed, but at this moment, there was nothing more that he needed than Haruna's presence in the house to lift his spirit. Especially after distressing work.

"Okaerinasai! Just a sec dear." Kariya began to organize his items onto the shelf and fridge. As he was doing this, he felt the sudden warmth and pressure coming from Haruna's body as she leaned into his back. Kariya felt the butterflies come up from his stomach, even though they had known each other for decades, Kariya felt almost exactly the same as the first time he met her. The emotion that he felt when he first met was not forgotten in his mind, he could almost feel his face turning red slightly.

"How was your day Kariya?" Kariya turned around, wrapping his arms around his wife and placed his lips against hers for a moment. "It was good, it seems the new recruits for this year have been promising so far. Oh, I met up with Izumi-sensei, she told me to say hello for her." He would have thought that he would be used to having Haruna live with him, but he was thankful that he could come home every day, and be surprised by how gorgeous his wife was. "I... have some bad news though."

The grin on his face faded a little, "I promised sensei that I would investigate a possible captain class threat in the human world, we're heading there tomorrow. I was the entire day for tomorrow as well." Kariya grimaced at the forgone cost of his captaincy, but if he didn't go there'd be more dire consequences for the rest of Soul Society. "How was work? Any problems with the new members?"

With Kariya's arms holding her, she could feel herself becoming light headed and a rapid pounding within her chest that would not stop. Suddenly, he kissed her gingerly, his soft lips pressing against her own. When he pulled away she could only think about how warm it was and how she could never get used to it. Catching herself in mid thought she redirected her attention to back to Kariya but he was already ending his word. There was a sense of fear that she could not ignore in him saying he had bad news. Had something come up, was there a issue with her? The possibilities were limitless. Still close enough to him that she could feel his breath she looked up at his face that had soured, before experience a sense of relief. Though it was still disheartening for him to have to leave out on such a dangerous mission, Haruna understood completely that it was his duty as a captain. But, even so she still felt sad and lonely whenever he walked away and all she could do is look on at his large back that would soon vanish before her vigil. "Geez anata..." With a frown upon her face she turned her head away for just a second, before smiling.

"Just kidding!"

Haruna teased playfully. "Just be safe, okay?" Adding she move away to help him put away the remaining groceries whilst responding to him. "Everything was fine, the new recruits are showing much promise." Haruna had been spending he majority of her time teaching those of lower ranks, helping them adjust to life within the Gobantai. It was a job fit for her. After she finished she made her way to the kitchens exit. "Would you like me to run you a bath first or do you want to eat anata?" Haruna asked.

"Geez anata..." Kariya noticed it, no matter how minute it was. That was the thing about him, his perception trailed beyond just mere combat, beyond mere learning, he absorbed all information n front of him that was both a blessing and a curse. He didn't want to do such a thing, but somewhere deep down inside him, he was kind of happy that she was sad to see him go. He nuzzled her cheek gently. "Just kidding! Just be safe, okay? Everything was fine, the new recruits are showing much promise." Kariya nodded his head sagely, closing his eyes as if he were the avatar of approval. "Hmm hmm. Good, tell me if they begin to have the audacity to start hitting on you." He instinctively popped one of his knuckles. "I'll give them a good pummeling." He was not going to forget the first time he assigned Haruna to teaching duties. If this were an anime, fire would be spewing from his eyes.

"A bath or dinner... hmm," Kariya's mind briefly trailed off at those words. A smiled lit on his face, "It depends. Are you going to be joining me for both, Mrs. Ryuugamine?"

Tsukinode Haruna. Age, 173. Tsukinode nobility. Kariya had been asked to attend a meeting between his clan and that of the aforementioned one, it was by his father's will that he had been forced to go. He didn't want to, personally, he never had any expectations of romance within his life, which was why even at the age of 480, Kariya had essentially been sonless, leaving no heir to the Ryuugamine name. He himself, personally believed that there was no such thing as happiness in relationships.

His father, his mother, his brothers, hypocritical as much as they were loving. He guessed that it was part of the spirit that caused flaw within his family. He knew ever since a child that true faithfulness to a partner was a lie dictated by society. Reality was much more grim. Promiscuity and lies ran through the nobility as much as it did the normal folk. So when he was asked to sire an heir by his father, he was not happy, but nevertheless-- despite all their faults-- they were still part of his life. Kariya stilled loved them. And so he took it upon himself to meet the woman he was supposed to marry.

She was so beautiful that Kariya's thoughts numbed and silenced upon the meeting. She had a hair of white gold, perfect alabaster skin and eyes that reflected an ocean of eternity between the two of them. Yet, there was a sense of overwhelming sadness that covered him. This girl, probably did not even love him. She would never be given the chance to ever choose who she loved, or who she wanted to take for a partner. As much as he was forced into this marriage, he too, was forced into this hand.

"Tsukinode Haruna?!" "Yeah... what's wrong?" "Are you joking, taichou? She's been named Seireitei bachelorette for the last twenty years." "O-oh... really? Could you tell me some more? I'm supposed to be meeting her in two days but..." Kariya sighed, pressing a hand to his head against his desk. His peers have been urging him to talk about who he was engaged to for the last week or so. Although Kariya had not been willing to state the details, he finally relented in a restaurant on a work day off. His peers were both livid and shocked, then happy, upon learning of the name. "Well, from what I hear, Tsukinode Haruna's the type of lady who's so beautiful that upon meeting her she'll paralyze you with nothing but her looks." "Matou, I'm not looking for Medusa. Can you be a bit more serious?"

"I AM! Look, Tsukinode Haruna's kind, pretty, gentle-- she's pretty much the ideal woman for any man looking to marry. She's famous among those who actually gather the trends of the time, unlike some overworked poor bastard named Kariya." Kariya's eye twitched. "At any rate, I'm jealous of you captain. Not everyone can be married to a goddess."

"I'm not so sure." Kariya stated, turning to look at his rum, before taking a sip. "What are you talking about captain? You're basically living the dream." "Can you imagine the level of stress a person goes through to maintain that image? Everywhere this woman goes: if you say this is how beautiful she is-- she has to give the impression of being kind, of being convcerned and loving, and still, even under such circumstances, have the audacity and steel to hold off on her chastity until the point where her family sees she is fit to marry. That's not an image, that is a prison." "I mean... I guess, if you put it that way. Your marriage is a prison then, that's how you view it? Oh look at me, I'm a tortured soul, I'm marrying the most grogeous woman in soul society, poor me." "I will dock your bonus, Matou." "Hahaha, my bad my bad." "Hm..." Kariya stared into his drinking cup.

It was like staring into an unfulfilled dream. A puppet shaped into a woman. She was beautiful, but it was a broken sense of beauty, a beauty so refined that it no longer gave a sense of warmth or kindness, a byproduct of living up to the name of the Tsukinode. They had been given the chance to speak to themselves, Haruna was in front of them, they had a single table between them, and a selection of food and tea raised in front of them. Kariya stared towards his drinking cup. He looked nothing as perfect as this woman. There had been so many things that he had done to not deserve this, yet, at the same time he felt he would never forgive himself if he walked away from this.

"H-hello." His voice was cracked, nervousness coursed through his system. He quickly drew the teacup to his lips and drank. "I'm.. um... well, your husband-to-be." Rhetoricals were probably not the best place to start. Perhaps compliments? "My peers said that you paralyzed men with just your beauty... they weren't wrong." He tried not to stutter. He couldn't keep this up. He just didn't feel it was right, he had to be honest. "Can I ask you a question... do you truly want to be here?"

Haruna stated, laughing as Kariya popped his knuckles playfully. Blushing at his response she quickly regained her composure, a wide grin decorating her face. "Of course!" Haruna said as she grabbed his hand, leading him into the bathroom.

"Kariya Ryuugamine?" A confused Haruna inquired. Both her parents sat across from her, a small coffee table seated between them. "He is the heir to the noble house of Ryuugamine and he is to be your betrothed Haruna-chan." It took a moment for her mothers words to truly resonate with her. She knew very well that this day would come, but it seemed to come so much quicker then she could have ever guessed. Her ocean colored eyes drifted away to the corners of the nicely furnished room. "You will be meeting him today so be sure to make a good impression. This marriage will bring more political power and influence to the house of Tsukinode. Please do not shame us." Her father added, his aged face etched with concern and uneasiness. "I understand otou-san," Concluded their discussion Haruna retreated to the quiet of her room to get dressed and properly prepare herself.

Opening her closet she searched through her many finely sewn dresses. As she decided on what to wear she couldn't help but think about the man she'd spend her life with, Kariya Ryuugamine. Dozens of questions floated through her mind; was he kind, handsome, lovable, what type of personality he had? The unknown was scary, something she feared. Stopping at a pure ivory dress laced with frills along its hems, Haruna slid it within her palm, admiring its softness. Taking it she twirled before falling onto her giant queen size bed, her cerulean gazed at the ceiling above as she were daydreaming. "I hope he's at least kind-hearted..." Those words passed her quivering lips as she pressed the dress closely to her chest. Sometime later and Haruna found herself finally seated before her soon to be husband an to her surprise he was the captain of the 5th division.

Haruna had no idea, she felt almost unworthy to have her hand offered to such a man. "He has the face of someone burdened with the weight of responsibility..." She thought as she ran her gaze over his person. His stern but lonesome eyes were bewitching to her. There was a story they told and she wanted to very much just listen. "Your too kind," Haruna responded a tint of pink touching her cheeks. "Its nice to meet you Kariya-san." She smiled like she was taught to, hiding her uneasiness. Taking the small, round, white cup into her palms she brought it to her lips an took a sip of the sweet tea. "H-huh?" Fumbling the cup, his words had caught her off guard and the look on her face all but gave it away. She found herself looking into the center of her lap, which was extremely disrespectful. She was told to always look her peer in their eyes, but she couldn't bring herself to.

"What do you mean?" Haruna muttered while peering up through sun kissed bang that obscured her sight. All she could think of was if he had saw through her polite ruse and felt offended? Her heart was tightening. Had she shamed the Tsukinode name?

"Chichu'e, I don't particularly like the idea of this marriage." Kariya knelt on the floor, a single hand placed against the grain of the tatami, the other one gently placing his zanpakuto against the floor. The sound of a cane smacking against the floor filled the room, once, Kariya was afraid of this sound, no longer. "You will marry her. And that is final, if you do not, I will cast you from this family."

Ryuugamine Daichi was the head of the clan, at the tender age of 1,230 years old, Daichi had only borne three sons, of the three of them, only one was born with a pure lineage of noble blood. "You are seiretei's staunch general, but before that, you are borne from royalty. With this marriage, not only do two of the most powerful clans merge to one another to become the fifth noble house, but you will ensure a long lasting stability between the powers of our families. You know the responsibilities of a Captain. Learn the responsibilities of a son."

"Its nice to meet you Kariya-san."

She was gentle, kind, and in many ways, reminded him of an innocent child. If it was Kariya's responsibility to marry Tsukinode Haruna, the responsibility she bore must have been even greater than him. As a female in the midst of nobility, she was borne as an asset to secure familial relations, that was her purpose, property. No matter how beautiful, no matter how much her parents loved her, no matter what kind of liberties she had, her shackle was that of an asset. Never once holding any any cards in her hand. She was groomed to the letter to be an obedient individual with no sight on how to live her life except how her parents dictated it.

"H-huh? What do you mean?"

It was understandable, the question was rather direct and straightforward, and also unexpected. Kariya briefly looked towards the table, contemplating whether or not he should continue this line of conversation. Not because he was afraid of the consequences, he had more power as a Captain than he did as a noble. What he was considering was the conflict of interest. He would have no issues with the idea of marrying this girl, but what was more important? The responsibilities to his clan, or the feelings that Haruna may have had? To Kariya, family was more important, or that's what he would have thought, but after putting a face to the name, he began to feel more conflicted. That's why he wanted to make sure. "Poor girl." He said, a small grimace reaching his lips. It was a ghost of a smile. His question had almost made her fumble on what would have considered to be one of his family's most important occassions.

"I uh... hmm, well..." Kariya contemplated his next few words carefully. "I like to think I would be happy with you." Kariya stated, his smile breaking slightly more openly. "I like to think that this would be a long lasting relationship, but, I'm not entirely sure if you would feel the same way as it would be for me." While he was a captain, he also knew people, how they acted, how beliefs were placed, and what consequences reality had on those beliefs. "You're a young girl, you must have had admirers, you must have had people you developed bonds with. If you marry me, the life you had will be over. Can you say you're willing to let that go, if your family had not asked you to?"

PRESENT

Kariya slowly pressed Haruna against his body, backing himself against the wall with her on his lap. His face buried itself into her neckline, and his hands gently lapped against the skin on her immaculate curves. He sucked down on her neck. "I was thinking of heading to the salt fields sometime with you. I hear it's one of the most beautiful places in the human world, I'd love to see it for myself as well." Kariya's eyes dimmed against the bathtub, he inhaled the air, a conflagraion of steam, perfumed bath salts and Haruna's natural scent coursed through his lungs.

Haruna thought this as she gently placed her hand over top his own and she leaned back on Kariya's shoulder. Never had she imagined she could be so intimate with another person, but if it was going to be with someone she was grateful it was him. His touched always served to get a rise from her both physically and mentally. The heat from the water and the intimacy between the two flushed her face florid with color. Her skin crawled, tingling with each smooth tracing of her curvy figure. Being able to be held by the man you love was one of the many benefits of being a woman and ti was something she could never be without. "I'm sure it is anata. I'd go anywhere as long as its with you." Whispering, Haruna closed her eyes, simply enjoying the serenity of the moment they basked in.

There was a sorrow upon his weak smile and she could sense it. Whether or not it was attributed to her womanly senses or not Haruna could not say, but she could simply feel he was conflicted. 'He's thinking about my feelings, how this affects me... thats so kindhearted.' Thinking to herself as she continued to look at him she couldn't help but feel somewhat better. If nothing he had a heart behind that aloof expression. "I-I.." Stuttering, she was trying to vocally express her mind, yet it seemed embarrassment and a tinge of uneasiness caused her to briefly faltered. "I can't really say. Iv'e never really considered a romantic relationship or entertained suitors. Iv'e had dreams of wanting to join the Gotei, but my parents would never allow it. I know the place i was born into and i can accept that. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by fate."

Haruna spoke with a strange sadness hidden in her words, but there was also an understanding and acceptance of it. Sneaking a glance at him she tried to gauge his reaction, unsure of how he would respond. Haruna had never told her friends or anyone else of her desire to serve the people. Many people didn't even have the slightest clue of her spiritual affinity, due to her parents constant hand in hiding that fact. "Know this, if you were to wed me Kariya-san...that I would be only yours..." Haruna was extremely embarrassed, but she wanted to express herself no matter what. This man sitting before her would be her husband and doing anything to taint or diminish that fact would bring shame to her family name. That she could not allow.

As Kariya listened to Haruna, one thing became very abundantly clear to him, and that was that Haruna has esentially never lived a life in which she could technically call "her own." It shed a fair bit of light as to the practices of the Tsukinode family, and the fact that neither they nor the Ryuugamine truly took care of their children was something that Kariya could not stand for. If this was how a family was supposed to treat one another, Kariya couldn't stand that thought. "I'm hoping that our family won't be like this." It was one thing to teach your children to learn discipline and obedience, but another thing entirely to dictate their flow of life into well beyond their adulthood. "Haruna-chan, I'm one of the division captains of the Gotei Thirteen, if you really want to join, I can make this a reality... but it's dangerous, and I don't think that the academy--" Kariya suddenly had a flash of insight.

He leaned in closer to Haruna, observing her expression. He was technically gauging Haruna's capabilities to be a death god, and her capabilities in terms of combat just by looking at her. Kariya smiled a little bit. "Do you know about spiritual power? It's something that most Shinigami use in order to combat the Hollow." Kariya gently pressed his thumb against Haruna's forehead, a strange "flow" of power would then transfer from Kariya's body into hers, gently flowing into a stream that would fill her from the feet to the head. "This is the energy I'm putting into you right now, as I'm unlocking your own spiritual energy." The surge would then stop, condense itself into Haruna's chest, and as if there were something that "clicked" inside of her, Haruna would suddenly be able to feel her own spiritual energy, unique, but distinct from Kariya's. "You have a lot of spiritual energy, and I can tell just by looking at you, that you would be excellent in something that we call kidou."

It was at that point, settled, that Haruna's marriage be postponed for a few decades, until a time in which she saw fit to be able to justifiably live a life under the Gotei 13 and marry Ryuugamine Kariya. Of course, there was conflict towards the decision, Kariya was heavily lambasted by his family members due to delaying the marriage, and Haruna's was furious she would choose such an option, but ultimately everything went through.

PRESENT

A somewhat more relaxed Kariya gently wrapped a bathrobe around his wife. "That was amazing Haruna." He kissed the top of her forehead as a show of gratitude for the bath time. "And I have an amazing dinner to look forward to now, I love you woman." Quickly tossing on a basic pair of loungewear bottoms, Kariya then proceeded to head out towards the dining room with Kariya, and turned on the news on their widescreen television. "And in other news, it seems ther has been more trouble in the human world as yet another small town has been utterly evaporated--" Kariya didn't exactly like the sound of that, it sounded like there was probably going to be something big announced for the Shinigami to have to handle. "Mmm..." His face was obviously somewhat worried about the events occurring, because he knew he would have to be involved in them.

"Want to know something interesting? I met up with the Espada just a few days ago, I never really told you this because I didn't want you to worry but-- well, the people we are in an 'alliance' with are some terrible people." The mention of the Espada made him want to light up a cigarette, but since he had been trying to cut the habit of smoking, he instead bore the feeling with a neutral expression. "There was one who killed another person for speaking out against a God, and there was another one who seemingly forced another girl to his will. I have to admit, I felt terrible about letting him take her, because then I realized how rare it is to be truly with someone that makes you... happy." And how those days might be a fleeting moment in time, and that they might one day be gone. He just wished they would never go away, as he slowly ate Haruna's home made cooking with a fork and knife. "They say that home is where the heart is... I never really knew what that meant until now."

There was a silver lining in what he said, a hope so to speak. As she was told he was a captain of the thirteen Court guard, that combined with his families name gave him and abundance of power both politically and militarily. She could see why her family wanted to push through for this marriage. As if struck by an epiphany or insight he leaned forward, his eyes for some reason seemed to discern over her face with fascination. When he finally spoke she had been too enthralled with looking at Kariya that she almost didn't hear what he said nor reply. "A little, though i dont know the de-ta-il-sss.." Taken aback by Kariya suddenly reaching for her face she stammered over her words as she closed her eyes. His thumb was pressed gently against her forehead, she could feel warm energy merge with her in a sense. It flowed throughout her entire body, melding with her own. It was a bit embarrassing, mostly because he was the first man who had ever laid a single finger upon her face.

Haruna's eyes had retreated to their corners as he spoke, explaining his actions further. The warmth had compressed itself within her chest, there was a well of power so to speak she had never before been able to feel. It wasn't foreign and she wasn't scared, it in fact felt surprisingly kind and not like some intrusive virus. Haruna took a brief moment to look at Kariya as he complimented her potential and his words brought a warmth to her cheeks. She was grateful for a chance to do something she wished for, but it was not easy. Convincing her parents took a wealth of time and even so there were stipulations that binded both he and her further; however, things proceeded without pause, though there were issues.

Exiting the bath Haruna was covered with her robe and thanked by Kariya. "Glad you enjoyed it, you work so hard anata." As he put on lounge wear, Haruna herself put on a black, lace nightgown that fit to her figure perfectly. Following Kariya into the dining room she sat opposite of him as he was focused on the news. There was talk of another small town who had been wiped off the face of the earth. It was saddening and the very reason why she wanted to become a death god. Even after he had finally be able to relax she could see the wrinkles forming from his stern expression.

"Thats awful..." Haruna paused, vexed over the poor girl, whos fate had taken a dive into a chasm. Haruna could only hope that she could climb out. "Always do what you think is right anata, I'll always support you." She was sure he didn't lift a finger because of the pact, but to allow that to happen was not something Kariya could stomach easily. She was worried for him, especially in these times of peace that were not guaranteed.

Taking a bit of the food she'd made she smiled at him gingerly.

"Neither did I."
