It was a particularly cold evening as the young redhead breathed heavily into her gloved hands, as though the warmth of her breath would aid in returning feeling to her fingertips. With a long red scarf wrapped securely around her neck, Kira continued to make her way through the crowded streets of down town New York.
It had been six months since she had finally found comfort in living within the vast city. While holding so many similarities to Boston, it also held its polar opposition. Though she wasn't much of a fan of sports, when it came to baseball, that was another story entirely. Her father had been a fan, as was the police force she had worked with. As such, it was hard not to get into the passion of the sport. And with that, moving to New York was just another problem when it came to handling the passionate Yankee fans of the city.
"Bleh," the woman let out a muted sigh of abrupt disgust at yet another Yankee-hat wearing person she walked by, followed with a light shudder as she crossed the street. Adjusting the knitted cap worn over her long red locks, the young woman reached into her inner coat pocket and pulled out a photo to mentally review her current job.
Sarah Johnson; Female, age 24. Last seen three weeks ago at a night club just a block from her current location. According to police reports, she had left the club with a friend. The pair had been approached by Kyle Franklin; Male, age 28. Kyle's statement indicated that he had confronted the pair in an attempt to bring them back to his place; Sarah's friend, Katheryn Washington; Female, age 24, indicated she had left with Kyle, leaving Sarah at the corner of the block. Time; 1:32am. Street cameras verified both Kyle and Katheryn's statements, showing the pair leaving Sarah alone at approximately that time. Sarah then used her cellphone to call for a cab; phone reports verified the call was made at 1:36am.
Afterward, traffic cameras showed Sarah waiting for approximately fifteen minutes before she started running off. There was nothing on camera to indicate why she had started running, and cameras only showed her for roughly half a block before she ran into an alleyway. No witnesses were around during the incident, no other people in the vicinity according to the video evidence. Nothing in Sarah's past indicated that she was in any sort of trouble, nor had developed any enemies. It was as though she simply disappeared.
Three weeks and still no updates for Sarah's parents. Which was why Kira had received the call. As someone who can certainly understand the case of a missing person herself, the young former detective had spent most of her time beyond the force attempting to follow through with what the police could not, though often found herself simply working in circles, and not being able to provide much else beyond what the police already had. Sometimes, however, she had been able to find a needle in the haystack, the one irregularity within the case, or the one witness who didn't truly understand what they had seen... while rare and few in between, it was enough to continue the uphill battle.
To that very alleyway, Kira now walked, surveying what the police already had three weeks prior. Whatever evidence may have been left behind of Sarah's whereabouts were certainly long gone, especially due to the snowfall throughout the passing weeks. Nevertheless, the types of disappearances she often dealt with still left trace evidence that even the police force couldn't find...
"It's faint..." Kira breathed out as she removed a single glove from her right hand. It certainly was faint, but she could still sense it, even so long after. Ever since she had started to see those faint, blurry images that no one else could, she had developed this unnatural scent... it was beyond something that could be seen, smelt, or touched... something beyond the normal five senses... and something she just couldn't describe, nor explain.
Crouching down within the alleyway to where she could feel the strange sensation most dense, she began to dig away at the snow, revealing the pavement beneath. With a deep breath, she pressed her palm against the cold ground and closed her eyes...
