"I really didn't expect someone like you to come to a festival like this..."
"Seriously? Free food, free booze; who wouldn't come!"
"Um... the booze isn't free..."
"Wait, what?"
The night brought a cold, brisk air with the changing of the seasons. Nevertheless, that did little to thwart the festivities of the various seasons. In times of peace, and even in times of war, it was important to keep the morale of all those who fought to protect the balance high, and it seemed to those who had organized such an event, that a traditional festival was in order. While certainly important to the Shinigami, all those within the Soul Society were invited to enjoy themselves for the three-night event, not simply in hopes to boost the overall morale of the division members, but bring unity and strengthen the bonds of those residing within the Soul Society.
While civilian spirits weren't allowed entry into the Gotei for obvious reasons, the festivities were hosted by one of the great noble families of the Seireitei, and of course, backed by a few other noble clans, in addition to receiving manpower from those within the Gotei. The Shimizu clan just so happened to be one of those sponsors, and certainly welcomed those of all social statuses into their home and vast garden area. A variety of large stalls were staged; food vendors of all sorts were lined up along the grass, and some even holding prize games for the younglings.
All in all, the set up was seemingly nicely done, and there hadn't been a challenge or situation that wasn't taken care of immediately prior to the festival opening. With the first day drawing in such a crowd, Kawa had initially planned on skipping out, though a nicely worded letter from her parents had deterred her initial decision. As such, the woman found herself conversing with a variety of people, upholding the Shimizu clan's image, and acting the part. Of course, coming was of her own free will; it wasn't like she came because her mother practically begged her to come.
"Mother," Kawa bowed melancholically to the elder woman, who nodded her head and smiled warmly.
"Kawa-chan, you made it!" the elder Shimizu expressed her gratitude by extending her arms, to which the younger Captain obliged the woman in a hug. There were a lot of things Kawa would do to piss her father off, but denying her mother the moment she apparently wished for wasn't one of them.
"Yea, I had to reschedule a few things and delegate some tasks, but managed to sneak away for a bit," the young Doctor explained as the embrace was released.
"Kawa-chan, I'm sure you'd just be sitting on your desk, playing with your origami cranes..."
"You know me too well," Kawa humored the woman, who let out a genuine laugh at her retort.
"You know, you could have dressed up in a kimono," her mother reflected the subject Kawa wished to avoid, having made an appearance in her normal Shinigami attire, Captain's haori and all. Despite normally being seen without the robe, or with it slung over her shoulder, Kawa opted to wear it properly, as to express her reasons for not dressing up to her family's normally high-class standards.
"I was coming straight from classes," Kawa said with a roll of her hand. "It was a toss up of making an appearance, or spending hours getting ready... you know how long it takes to get those just right."
... shit, she should have used that as an excuse!
"Well, I'm glad you came nonetheless," the elder Shimizu exclaimed her joy as she reached out and squeezed her daughter's hand gently. "It's been too long, you know... your... father wi-"
"Oh, is that a steak skewer stand?" Kawa hastily interrupted with a look of excitement. "Pardon me, mother, but I'm just famished. They don't feed us as well as you'd think."
And with that, the daughter was off to lose herself within the crowd, avoiding the topic, as always...
