WE ARE AN AU NON-CANON BLEACH ROLE PLAY, and no, we won't die in a month. Our creators are very dedicated to this project and are here to provide you with an easy-flowing, member-driven plot system. To be completely honest, there wasn't much to do in the city in the least. Finding it much more entertaining to spend him time watching the koi fish in his garden swim around than sit where he was with a cold cup of tea and a few sticks of dango, he didn't speak out a single word.. merely, sitting there. It was as though he just existed, another part of the scenery as people passed by and paid him no mind. He didn't draw attention to himself, though his haori with number upon its back could let anyone know who he was. Did he want to be known? Did he want himself to be called out before all the civilians and shinigami? Sighing- pushing his plate of 'treats' away as well as his tea, he laid himself crossly upon his stretch of bench, closing his eyes.

While he could've been doing something all the more productive with his time, he found it necessary to spend at least six to eight good hours a day resting with naps, as well as the typical eight he spent actually -sleeping-. Productivity.. ? Such a word was foreign to him, especially in such a situation like so. Sighing to apparently no one as he seemed to drift off for those brief and subtle moments, he found peace within himself, small smile making its way to lips. As long as he didn't have to do any paperwork, he was alright with anything.

Trips to the Seireitei’s inner city made Kaede feel like she was home. It was cleaner, however, and there was more fresh grass and the distinct lack of a lingering smell of dirt and piss. Despite these essential factors the heat and energy that a bustling market street stirred a certain nostalgic in her bones. Everything from the amorphous chatter of the crowds, the spicy smell of hot food and even the simple sound of feet scrambling on the gravel helped ease her soul. If she closed her eyes she could almost swear she was back forty years ago in the Rukongai. This place, though? It wasn’t home, but it was close enough to put her mind at rest.

Kaede turned a corner past what looked like a small, family-owned teashop and moved towards the park. She pulled a long, bamboo pipe from the folds of her uniform and began to roll a small ball of tobacco in her palm. Kaede had never felt as useless in her life as she had this month. She had already proven herself to be an excellent shinigami. She could fight, she could do that ‘konso’ thing and she was eager to put her new skills to use. She passed all of her tests and was more than ready to start kicking the crap out of some hollows. But she couldn’t. Why? Because she had to have a god damned graduation ceremony first.

She uttered a cross between a sigh and a grunt as she did her best to keep herself calm and collected. She popped the ball of tobacco in to the bowl of her pipe, struck a match on the brickwork and lit her pipe. A few test puffs and she was ready to go, clenching the slender instrument between her teeth as she strolled. And that was when she saw him.

Kaede didn’t know who he was, but she could tell what that haori meant even if the guy was lying down. She’d seen it enough times. She could tell that he was a captain. A captain of the Gotei-13 was sitting outside in the park in midday just resting as though he had no work to do. A vein bulged on Kaede’s forehead. Here she was, bemoaning the fact that bureaucracy and tradition were keeping her from doing her job and there was this guy. This man, with all of his power and authority was using it just to take a goddam nap? She’d seen enough already.

”And just who the fuuuuuuuck do you think you are?” Her shadow eclipsed the sun and cast itself over the lounging captain as she stood over him with her arms crossed and her pipe lodged between pursed lips. Her words were spat with venom that would make any bystander assume she was speaking to a man who just spat in her eye. On the off chance the he was asleep, or simply didn’t hear him, Kaede followed her question up with a puff of smoke directed straight for the captain’s face. Fuck his position as authority, he had to answer for himself.

Irritation briefly passed over his features as he first took into account that someone was blocking his sunlight. Taking this to be a mere passing gesture however- some passerby merely gazing at one of the various shops across the streets in awe, he faded back into what seemed to be a peaceful rest. Only.. the shadow didn't disappear, nor did his irritation. If he ignored this person, would they go away? Would they leave him and his rest be? He surely hoped so- he didn't want to have to deal with anything on such a nice day as so. And yet.. he had to, all the same. Words filled with venom, even he sensing what sort of contempt they held beneath the surface, he sighed aloud, the scent of tobacco filling his nostrils, bringing tears to his eyes.

Allowing himself a moment to sit up- to situate himself even, he wiped at his eyes, taking her into general view, irritation not fading in the least. Who was she? What gave her the right to disturb his rest? In fact, why was he even dealing with the situation? Eyeing her with a certain clarity, though wondering these things all the same, he leaned back against the bench, yawning widely and into the air- mayhaps to her own dismay or anger. ".. What exactly do you want with me, and why did you just disturb my rest? Not just anyone can get away with that, you.. person?" Maybe it was just his memory failing him again.. but he wasn't sure if he was supposed to know her or not. Was he? He couldn't recall ever meeting someone like her.

Kaede held back her wrath during the painfully long time it took this bumpkin to wake up from his outdoor snooze and remember how to make words. She could have used that time to throw an impressive array of insults and expletives at him, but she knew better than to waste her best ammunition right off the bat. So she just stood there, taking the occasional drag from her pipe and blowing small streams of smoke around the two of them and once he had finally said his peace, each word slurred from his mouth like he only just learned the language, Kaede puffed out her chest and growled herself:

”You should be working.” Though vein on her forehead was beginning to deflate, Kaede’s voice was one of barely contained rage. ”Sitting there with your fancy-ass captain’s cloak and lying on a bench like a hobo. What a joke.”

She wasn’t too sure what to do with herself right at this point except see how far she could push her luck. She placed her pipe back in her mouth and to her despair noticed that the tobacco had already burned out. That was the problem with these Kiseru pipes: they could only hold a little amount of kizami at a time. Just her luck that it happened to taste better than regular tobacco.

Instinctively she reached for the box of kizami tobacco in her pocket, about to ball up another round to smoke when looked down at what she presumed were his snacks. Dango and tea, eh? Well, it’d be impolite to just dump her pipe ash on the road like a vagabond. No, she needed an ash tray. She took on a rebellious little smirk as she removed the pipe from her mouth and extended it towards the bench. In one fluid motion she turned the pipe and with a tap expelled the ash directly in to the tea. Hah, take that, authority!

Man, that's what all this was about? Not like he wanted to get into it with her or anything- that'd be too much work. But.. he had to respond somehow, right? Shrugging his shoulders lightly as his gaze seemed to follow her own- she dropping ashes into his tea, he reached right hand for his cup all the same, blowing upon it before taking small sips. Was he generally affected by her display? Couldn't say he was- though the ash in itself didn't help the flavor. "Eh. I was working, but now i'm taking a break. I'd rather not be told what to do by someone who probably hasn't even hit a hundred years yet. Then again, you may be right. You can do the work for me later, just tell me what squad you're in." Trying to get out of his workload by putting it on someone else? This was a method that always seemed to work with him- and he was proud of it in fact.

Small and slightly condescending smirk on face all the same, he pointed at her with left index, chuckle escaping from between lips. "Do I know you, by any chance? I have a hard time remembering anyone in particular.. but, you? I don't think i've ever had the pleasure."

“Gee, I dunno, what fuckin’ squad am I in?” Kaede looked down at the academy uniform she was wearing, the white and red colour scheme not only clearing distinguishing her from any graduated shinigami but also cementing the fact that she wasn’t in any squad at all yet. To ask her what squad she was in was like asking a bald man what his colour of his hair was. Whether or not he was really that stupid or he was just trying to rile her up was not obvious. In any case she just took her pipe and replaced it in her mouth, despite it being unlit.

”We aint met yet, but you can bet your ass this isn’t the last you’ll see of me. “ There was a moment, like electricity in the air, as Kaede took a series of small but deep breaths. As though a dragon were inhaling and preparing to expel fire, unleashing a flood of peril and devastation upon the fool in front of her. When she finally spoke, it was less like listening to words and more like enduring an unbearably hot summer’s day.

”And I aint gonna do shit for the likes of you. Hell, if they’re putting soft-headed milk-drinkers like you in charge I’d hate to see what your former captain was like. Some spineless old fart, right? Probably couldn’t tell his sword from the thumb up his ass, I bet. I can’t expect anyone could have trained up such a useless, lazy, irresponsible runt of a captain. Or maybe your squad is just where they send all of the talentless, good-for-nothing bootlickers, eh? You’re a disgrace to the uniform and I want nothing to do with a captain who doesn’t do his job.”

And then her shoulders sagged back and Kaede let her puffed-out chest recede. There was always something cathartic about yelling at a moron, whether they are a captain or a schoolkid. It wouldn’t matter what this captain said or did as long as she was happy knowing he knew what she thought of him. At least now she knew which squad she didn’t want to be a part of. Kaede couldn’t really call this trip to the park less than educational.

A flicker of annoyance passed over his features. With it, she'd feel something strange- the life in the area seemingly drained as all seemed to weigh down with the pressure of his very being. Unlimited within the walls of the Soul Society- and even within Rukongai, he was given full leash over his very spiritual prowess. Thus, its harness tearing away from grasp for a brief moment- allowing Kaede to feel in full the weight of his pressence- and how he held it back for her sake alone, he took control of it once more and afterwards, irritation still easily seen upon face. Not only that however.. but a certain pain. "You can insult me all you want, but I will -not- have you insult the man who saved my life, whether he be alive or not. Do not judge a book by it's cover, sapling- this is something you'll come to learn.. if you survive that long, that is."

Standing himself upon soles- eyes upon her as he seemed to scoff at her very appearance, he flashed a well-known smirk all the same- condescending, and at this very moment, spiteful. "If my squad's full of the talentless, good-for-nothing bootlickers, i'll make a personal recommendation for you to join- one that you won't be able to refuse, mm? I'm sure you'd like that, wouldn't you m'girl?" Oh, he was toying with her now- trying to push her buttons, the same as she had for him. He didn't feel any sort of remorse- not after she'd just insulted Jakuchu like she had.

Kaede was playing with fire. She knew that all too well. The sensation was vaguely like drowning or, for a split second, being grabbed by the throat. The captain seemed to forget himself momentarily, allowing his spiritual pressure to run wild. Though he reigned it in she was left almost breathless, visibly stricken by a mere glimpse of his full power. Had Kaede been forced to endure it any longer she’d have been out cold or, at worst, dead. Either way she had been shown pure and simple that she was messing with a powerful force.

And she loved it.

This was what she liked to see. Even as she gasped for breath a smirk passed her face. The woman had hit a weak spot in his armour and he was finally starting to fight back. The thrill that messing with a captain posed was grand, even addictive. If she let up now then she wouldn’t live it down. Go hard or go home, as she used to say.

”Come on, now.” He stood up straight, speaking as though she had sprinted a mile flat. ”Do I really sound like the bootlicking sort to you?” he held her hands on the back of her hips and took another deep breath, this time out of necessity. ”But yeah, okay, I admit that making fun of your old captain was pretty poor of me. I’m sure he was a great guy. Model captain, in fact. I imagine that if he could see you now he’d be so happy. Just imagine: the look of pride on his face when he knows that you’re using your authority over his old squad to force your work on to your subordinates and shirk your duties so you can go nap in the park.”

She made a mock salute to the sky, still huffing somewhat from her brief ordeal from before. She probably wouldn’t handle another one of those spiritual weights so soon, lest she be returned to the academy in a coffin. She figured that brutalising a whelp like her would look bad on his record, though. Then again from what she’d seen they were letting just about any moron with enough spiritual pressure be a captain these days. What a waster.

”Maybe you should be off saving people’s lives, then, you know? Just like your old cap’? I’m sure that’d be a much better use of your time than sitting out here and drinking tea with tobacco ash in it.” Kaede visibly wretched at the thought of that incident. She wasn’t quite sure she believed her eyes when she first saw it, but yeah: that guy definitely drank from the cup she used as an ashtray. ”Shit, man, have some standards…”

Anger just about deflating— knowing automatically that she was just trying to get him hot and bothered, he held up left hand, flicker of movement made with right as he transferred item from right to left in swift motion. Holding pipe between index and middle fingers, he pocketed the item, tucking it into kosode before nodding briefly. "I'll be borrowing that for a bit, thanks. You can pick it back up at my office later, or i'll have someone bring it back to you. Now, if you'll excuse me.." Gaze finding itself focusing off to his right, he took step in that direction easily, passing her— if no response was made that is. He had no way of knowing if she'd care for his actions in the least, or if she would even bat a single lash.

Did he truly care? Not in the least.

Truly having his uses for such an item in itself, he stopped- turning his head back lightly to glance at her before uttering words— words that he found to be true himself. "I've saved many and have lost many. Don't insult me, nor accuse me for a lack of dedication to the cause or even slander a name you know nothing of. It shows inexperience, lack of formality, weakness, and above all.. you lack respect. Learn." T'was strange that he'd be the one to give advice. Eh, wasn't as if she'd care enough to give a rat's ass; she'd scoff, insult him or the old guy again and cuss him out.

”You’re one to be talking about a lack of formality.” Kaede didn’t turn to look at him but she still huffed in disbelief when the guy who had been idle and quite open about the extent to which he avoids his responsibilities started talking about formality. She was also pissed about the pipe thing on a principled level but she owned, like, a million of the things so it didn’t matter much that one had been confiscated. She just made a mental note to carry two pipes in case she pissed off any more captains.

”You want me to show respect? Then how about you show me something worth respecting?” There was something in her voice that wasn’t there when she had cussed the captain out earlier. A more transparent sincerity that wasn’t so easily masked by the kind of hollow rebel act she seemed to pull so often. ”You’re a captain for a reason. Though I am loath to wonder what that reason is, I’d suggest that you act as though you deserve to wear the haori.”

Kaede turned slowly on her heels, half facing the captain with a look of genuine despair.
”You know, you’re nothing like what I hoped a captain would be like when I was in the academy. You speak of respect but I don’t think you give a damn if I respect you or not. I don’t think you care if anyone respects you.” She shook her head. ”Well you should. You’re a leader, and if you can’t show people that you’re worth respecting as their leader then they aren’t going to at their best when things get ugly. That's the only thing you should be caring about.”

"And you aren't going to command respect when you act like such a spoiled moron." A disgruntled sigh and she started to walk off, desperately needing some kind of stiff drink. Kaede couldn’t bear to be around the man, as he reminded her too much of the oafs at the academy. The noble house kids who sat around like they owned the place, doing bugger all with full knowledge that they’d graduate regardless of their performance.

”Asshat wants me to learn? I learned all I think I can stomach for, today…”
