Sighing, Kotone delved into her mind, reviewing her battle theory again.
Looking around her, she found herself surrounded by rolling hills of endless grass. Any further and she would meet the sea; the perfect middle. The only other signs of life were the many insects, majority of which being ants. There was also the occaisional bird.
Clasping her hands in front of her, a signature blue rectangle of translucent reishi formed.
It was time to begin training.
Ultimately, her fights as a marksman fell down to five battle "zones":
Firstly, the "Cross Range": A ring about 4-5 meters in radius, centered on both her and the opponent. All of her awareness, reactions and distance training was centered around keeping this much distance between her and all hostile targets. Within this distance, Lichtfluss is ineffective, forcing Kotone to fall onto her skills with hand to hand combat and Seele Schneider. However, Kotone knew that her skills with those did not amount to much, forcing her to train her speed and agility instead. She didn't have much of a "sword arm", but she emphasizes training to weave in and out of that distance, using Hirenkyaku or otherwise.
Secondly, the "Double Range": A ring twice the size of the "Cross Range". Here, Lichtfluss is somewhat effective, using non-assisted manual aim. Kotone also trains to stay out of this range, but here she can use her Heilig Pfeil well enough to be a threat. With it's speed, it would be wiser to back off.
Thirdly, the "Light Range": From the outer edge of the "Double Range" to approximately 35 meters away from her. Here, Lichtfluss is most effective, granting her the ability to pelt multiple enemies with her attacks. At this range the enemy can dodge and block easily, but this is where her marksmanship training comes in.
Fourthly, the "Heavy Range": Between 35 meters to 60 meters. This represents the maximum range of her techniques. It would be more viable at this point to focus several Heilig Pfeil on a single target.
Finally, the "Sniper Range": This goes from beyond 60 meters to 2 kilometers, or, for some reason, up to visual range. Lichtfluss' kanoneform has the unique ability to strike anything within this range, but the amount of time she needed to prepare a shot and fire it makes this almost pointless. However, it's still a feature of Lichtfluss, and so sniping became a possibility for her.
Judging by the maximum distance of her own Hirenkyaku, those she stand a chance against can, at best, move from the "Light Range" straight into the "Cross Range". This poses a big problem for Kotone, because her Blut Vene simply is not invincible.
All this consideration taught her two things: One, she needed a reliable method to survive at least one strike as she backs out of "Cross Range". Two, crossing between ranges is absolutely vital, and having a technique which could constantly threaten an enemy like a lethal cross-range opponent is paramount.
In order to accomplish these two feats, Kotone had devised two separate techniques. One was simply a shield, but the other was much more complex.
