APPEARANCE
PERSONALITY
Mimir was always a warm person. He possessed an outgoing nature and attentiveness to others that many envied. He was kindly and easy-going and absolutely loved people. It was always in his nature to be an extrovert. Though at times, particularly in combat, he could be considered detached or impersonal. Mimir carried a certain air about him when it came to combative affairs. He considered himself very impartial to them, dichotomous to his standard demeanor, and though once more in opposition to his standard set of beliefs, Mimir understood the necessity of conflict. He was never one to have any kind of emotional reservations, and was always open to making new connections and meeting new people. He was also extremely gregarious, preferring the company of large groups to solitude, relying on emphatic communication to maintain his positive perspective. He was considered extremely sympathetic to the problems of others, friendly to a flaw, and exceptionally cooperative when it was necessary.
His reasoning skills were always something he considered one of his most beneficial traits. His capacity for abstract thought, and extreme intelligence. He took immeasurable pride in his desire to learn and his ability to learn so quickly. Unlike most individuals, he didn't suffer from an inability to handle abstract or complex issues, and had no issue with any form of academia, ranging from the sciences to the arts. Mimir was a walking encyclopedia of historical knowledge. His knowledge of legends and lore ranges from religious beliefs, heroic tales, folk lore, to even the more 'academic' of such mythos, like the knowledge of the Shinigami, the existence of the Hollow and their subspecies as well as many of their deeper histories. He had a frustrating habit of over-explaining things, even if a person clearly understood the concept, often using very strange analogies to compare situations and scenarios. He looked upon ignorance like a disease to which knowledge is the only remedy, and he took no greater pleasure than enlightening.
His emotional instability, however, did not reflect the most wonderful of his attributes. He was considered very reactive, emotionally. He was strongly affected by his feelings and though he wasn't easily upset, the negativity resultant from saddened states were usually long-lasting, as he perpetually reflected on those things. Despite this, he was extremely mature (in some regards) and was more than capable of facing reality calmly. His emotional instability was more a result of his conflicting sets of personal beliefs and the burden of responsibility and power. Those with the power to affect change carry the weight of taking the actions that result in said change, and the consequence of whichever direction that change takes. He struggled consistently with this paradigm.
In accordance with his extroverted nature, Mimir had an extremely dominant personality. More than anything he was an assertive and competitive person. His desire to win, or to be the best, often overtook his sensibilities, and when given the opportunity to prove his superiority, he almost always take advantage of that situation Though a dominant personality, he was deferential and paid a heavy amount of respect to those he considered his superiors, or those with any earned position of authority. He often tried to avoid conflict if the situation permitted it, and was just as often accommodating to the needs of others.
Like most youthful adults, he carried a huge liveliness with him. He was an extremely animated character, spontaneous and always enthusiastic. There are those that described him as a cheerful, happy-go-lucky individual. Though he was impulsive, his feelings often times having gotten the best of him, and he had difficulty keeping his tongue in check. This went hand in hand with his explicit nature. He was prone to chatter and gossip, and his language and humor was generally far from child-friendly. It was far more likely that he blabber or communicate incessantly than remain silent in even the most dire of situations. This doesn't, however, mean that he was not without his moments of restraint. Like any other person, he suffered through his own bouts of introspection, focusing more on internal struggles in some moments, than on what was currently occurring.
As someone with a considerable consciousness in regards to the rules, Mimir was extremely conscientious and dutiful. There are those that described him as moralistic, and while this was true, it seems to only apply on a personal level. In many ways, he can was considered a nonconforming individual. Though he understood the need for specific rules, he did at times feel that peculiar rules were irrelevant or ridiculous, and ignored them entirely, often time to his own peril. He was also an extremely self-indulgent individual, who enjoyed the greatest pleasures life had to offer, namely: women, games, and women.
As an extreme extrovert, Mimir was possessive of a peculiar degree of social boldness. He was extremely uninhibited and was known to say or do exceptionally explicit things in the most formal of scenarios. Despite this, he was sensitive and was considered a refined individual. An aesthetic with an extremely sentimental side, who despite his intellect, often relied on his intuition instead. Though sensitive, he was an objective individual who agreed with the ideals of Utilitarianism, simply put, the greatest good for the greatest number of people, regardless of the price.
His demeanor, however, did seem to cause a wavering in his vigilance. He was often extremely trusting and accepting of others, rarely suspicious or skeptical unless given good reason. It was this that often leads him to be unsuspecting, and ultimately led him vulnerable to the betrayal that led to his demise. He was abstract and imaginative, possessive of a peculiar naivete that made him appear absent minded, or absorbed in his ideals. While there is a great truth to this, he was still a solution oriented individual, grounded in what was practical. Sometimes what is conventional is necessary, and sometimes the needs of the moment force us to ignore the wants of our emotions.
He was someone you could consider genuine, forthright and extremely naive, but at the same time extremely worldly and astute. He carried his apprehensions, and was extremely prone to guilt and self-blame, particularly when he felt like he was the one who illicit-ed particular events that resulted in a greater amount of harm or suffering than good. Despite his issues with guilt, he was often unworried and confident in his own abilities, self-satisfied and assured that he could and would, ultimately, affect things towards the greater good.
As a young male, Mimir was both extremely self-reliant and open to change. While he respected traditional ideals, he believed in growth. He was a very liberal individual, who believed in flexibility and the freedom to choose. In his mind, the greatest and most absolute manifestation of freedom, is choice, and it serves as the greatest tool to affect the cause of what is 'good'. He was resourceful and analytical, although critical of himself he was often capable of adapting to change, and thriving regardless of his environment. He could also have been considered a compulsive perfectionist, often exacting his will power on any tasks he performed with the sole desire of being the best. Unlike most perfectionists, however, he was flexible and impulsive; not only able to tolerate disorder, but also able to thrive in it. He was extremely careless in regards to social rules, and extremely self-sentimental. He was also extremely impatient and driven.
While Mimir was often overtly agitating or immature, he was nothing short of honorable, though he had no qualms about stabbing an enemy in the back. If he gave his word, he kept it without attempting to escape from his duty. All oaths were sacred to him. He believed that when one was gifted with power, they have an obligation to protect the ones around them, and to use that power to further the state of the universe in the most positive direction. It was this desire to protect, to be a Hero, that was responsible for his unique characteristics.
HISTORY
It is the common assertion that heroes are not born but that they are instead made. Heroism is the result of experiencing atrocity and raising above and beyond fear, to a peculiar point of courageousness to overcome and prevent such future horrors. Though, the same can be said of villains, it is all simply a matter of perspective.
It was a period of two-hundred and fifty five years ago that MIMIR was born; the result of artificial soul experimentation and the pinnacle of mod soul technological advances. Born under the theory that by using the soul of a Shinigami as the base, they could create an artificial shinigami soul. For obvious reasons, such experimentation was never publicized. Through the tests and trials the Doctor learned very quickly that the souls of lowly strength shinigami could not survive the procedure, instead being torn asunder and destroyed through the process of transference. It wasn't until he'd managed to acquire the body of a dying Captain-Class shinigami that the Doctor was able to complete the procedure, offering it as an extreme surgery to prolong his life. The experimentation was an absolute success, unfortunately the entity whose soul was used as the groundwork for the formation of MIMIR no longer existed, outside of the raw force of spiritual energy that went into shaping the new soul, all the memories and experiences of the previous entity, were lost. This, of course, was an intentional result of the experimentation, in the hopes of recognizing the absolute fragility of the soul as an individual and the strength it possessed as a raw material.
Those first few years were much akin to childhood to MIMIR, the Doctor serving as a father figure and taking him under his wing as a fledgling, inscribing him with attributes essential for a successful inventor. MIMIR exalted in the pleasure of learning, and in creating. They were the truest joys he possessed in life, he felt as though he loved the experimentation. Often times he struggled with himself, wondering what it meant to be an artificial entity. What thoughts of his were his own, which were predetermined? What feelings was he capable of? Were they his own feelings? Were they predispositions? What would happen to him when he died? He was specifically designed to deal with high-powered threats, and more so to assist in the production of future Mod Soul generations. It was in this capacity that he was attributed with the advanced intellect that he possessed and a vast knowledge of the ways of Shinigami Society. Luckily for MIMIR, such a position also warranted a higher degree of self-awareness, so that the unit in question was better capable of dealing with potent and adaptable foes. Thus, unlike most of his siblings, MIMIR was programmed with an enormous degree of curiosity to replace the standard obedience protocols which ultimately resulted in the evolution of his artificial intelligence. Not all Mod Souls are created equally.
It was oft cited in literature that evil wasn't an intrinsic property - that things weren't born evil, evil was an evolution of the natural predisposition to do and to be good. The hollow embodied this, they were the corruption of good and according to his protocols, the physical embodiment of evil. MIMIR was tasked with the destruction of these monstrosities just as all his siblings were, for they were the Mod Souls, beings created for the sole purpose of destroying the Hollow on behest of their Shinigami creators. Though, MIMIR was special -- unlike his siblings, he possessed a capacity that rendered him nearly indistinguishable from any normal shinigami. He possessed an enormous amount of spiritual power, a proficiency in kido, and most surprisingly, the ability to draw upon the power of his own personal zanpakuto.
It was roughly 50 years after his production that the Mod Soul's began being produced in massive quantities, beginning their deployment into the human world to deal with the impending Hollow invasions. Eleventh Unit Mimir was tasked to use his exceptional combat abilities to deal with threats that outclassed most of the other Mod Soul Units, specifically Menos and Gillian. At this, he was exceptional, though it always caused him to suffer from immense inner turmoil. Why were they brutally slaughtering the encroaching Hollow forces, what was their true motivation? Such concepts were beyond him, and he knew better than to question the commands of his superiors, and more still to give anyone cause to believe that he could bypass standard Unit Protocols.
After the campaign, the Mod Soul Units were returned to Sereitei. It was this period of time that brought Mimir a true sense of joy, the times of peace wherein he could engorge himself on knowledge and information without the fear or threat of violence. Though the ethical quandaries regarding Mod Souls and their use in human corpses became an ever-growing concern, Mimir paid it no heed, instead taking his time to explore the Soul Society in the comfort of his own Gigai. It was during this time that he first experienced a foreign emotion, when he'd been witness to the staggering allure of a young female Shinigami. Though he knew his attraction was forbidden, he began to schedule his daily tasks in order to see her as much as possible and it wasn't long until she had noticed, leaving letters of mirth in the locations he normally stood in order to observe her. Eventually, this became a daily ritual for the two.
Many years had passed, Eleventh Unit Mimir carried the letters from the girl, her name was Lily, a fresh recruit from graduation now making her way into the Kido Corps in the Soul Society. They were not love letters, but Mimir was hoping, so he kept them folded in a plastic material at the bottom of his satchel. In the late afternoon, after a days work, he would dig a small hole, wash his hands under the waters of his canteen, unwrap the letters holding them delicately with the tips of his fingers, and spend the last hours of the light pretending. He would imagine romantic trips into the wilds of the Soul Society. He would sometimes taste the stationary, knowing her tongue had been there. More than anything, he wanted Lily to love him as he thought he loved her, but the letters were mostly chatty, elusive on the matters of love. She was virginal, he was almost sure. She was so practiced in her Kidou, and she wove her magically beautifully, eloquently making her way through the university. She would often quote lines of poetry and she never regarded his nature as a Mod Soul, except to tell Mimir, 'take care of yourself'. The letters weighed 10 ounces and they were all signed Love, Lily, but Eleventh Unit Mimir understood that Love was only a way of signing and did not mean what he often pretended it had meant.
Much had happened since that fateful day of their original meeting, the stance on Mod Soul's had reached a treacherous height, with talk of destruction of all the existing units. It was due to his unique position that Mimir was given word about the situation, in the form of notices regarding it being intentionally left out by his superior, as well as instruction on how to utilize the gateway to escape to the Human World.
Though hugely conflicted, Mimir was forced into action after hearing how many Mod Soul's were already being put down. He knew it was not possible to overcome the Shinigami forces in their entirety, and so he fled to the location in which he first met Lily, hoping to leave her one last letter to grant her condolences for he was afraid he didn't have the proper tools to operate the gate and escape himself. It was there that he found her waiting, tears streaming down her face. Lily and Mimir exchanged one last set of notes, and she explained to him that she was capable of operating the gate to facilitate his escape. Though Mimir refused her offers, accepting the fate of his people, she intoned how miserable it would be if he were to die due to his own stubbornness, and with that they rushed to their escape.
It wasn't until many months later that he'd awoken, sidled in an abandoned house with nothing but a satchel of letters and his clothing. His memories were fragmented from some unknown force, and he spent the next several months trying to regain his sense of self. For several years he lived among the community, embracing his life as one of their own. It was then, when he'd observed a monstrous hollow attacking a member of his community that the truth of his nature resurfaced, his deepest rooted programming demanding that he destroy the vile creature before him, and although still weakened, he did. It was at this time that he finally had the emotional fortitude to open Lily's final envelope which described the true nature of her feelings for him and the plight of their positions, even how she expected that she would die on that night, but better for her to die and be with him in this world, then for him to die and cease his existence. How sad it was, that Mimir had no memory of this Lily. He felt only a tinge of sadness after reading the letter, ultimately concluding that it must be some form of mistake; he knew no girl named Lily, he never had.
For the next fifty or so years, Mimir trained regaining control of his previous spiritual and physical faculties, relocating every ten years so that the residents didn't notice that his body never managed to age. Although he was far removed from his previous capacity, he eventually made his home in Karakura town, drawn to it out of his innate programmings insistence to destroy Hollow, and though his memories had left him, they had recently begun to re-emerge as a result of his self-experimentation.
