Even in heaven, angels still felt fear. The shadow knew this. Its target knew this. But the angels themselves did not know this; they did not see the knife in the shadows, poised to take their lives.

A healer.

A fighter.

A scientist.

Those were the three gathered so far. Soon the party would be complete, and the journey could begin in earnest. Tonight, one of the most important members of the group was being sought out. The assassin caused the door to open by itself, granting it access to the library of the Nanabantai. It was empty tonight, save for one soul that was not the shadow.

The killer.

The shadow, with no presence nor sound, moved in just as something of its namesake should. It sought out the Nanabantai-Fukutaichou for reasons unknown.

There were few words to in the dictionary that had the ability to truly illustrate the depth in which malevolence lurked. And on this particular night, the Nanbantai Fukutaichō’s sensitivity was at its culmination. The reasons in which his perceptions were spiked was beyond has ability to fathom, and unlike most, fear wasn’t wrapping its finger around his throat; hunger was. The appetite for knowledge, power—the unquenchable thirst that was justified under the gauntlet of peace and order. But it wasn’t enough.

The red-haired soul reaper paced under the eerie embrace of darkness, flipping through an encyclopedia in order to locate the necessary components to prove a certain theory correct. The Shinigami’s lifeless amber eyes glowed of a maroon red hue that blended quite well with his hair, yet more importantly, allowed him a hastier and decisive read. No many how many armies of letters he absorbed into his optics, the activity proved futile. Ambition consumed him, and with each page he flipped through, his aspirations tempered and gradually began to creep along every molecule of his being. Through this logic, this palpable zeal, sleep became an unnecessary dampening to his productivity.

The free strands of red-hair softly whisked as his head rose, and his celerity-injected fingers and feet froze. The sarcastic soul’s visage coiled into an unconscious grin as his exquisite optic implants displayed their acuity. Through his spiritual peripherals, he felt nothing in the immediate area. Even through his eyes’ current night vision, he failed to detect a thing. Yet the intrinsic perception of a warrior; his gut, had tingled of an irrefutable sense. Through this cautious mindset, he knew very well that his solitude had been interrupted.

The man’s glowing red orbs were the only notable source of illumination throughout the entirety of the occupied field of space, and they guardedly drifted to the left and right to legitimize his awareness. Aside from the aforementioned, the guarded individual’s movements remained as still as any corpse, his breathing light, and his membrane processed to utilize athleticism of his body in order to deliver a quick assassination to whomever owed.

The sword slithered like a snake out of the shadow’s cloak. It reflected the dim lights of the library, sending a single sliver of silver down the edge of the katana. Just as its master, this zanpakutou exuded no presence. It did not exist in the conventional sense. Just as the shadow did, this slender piece of soul-forged steel defied common sense.

One moment the shadow was standing at the entrance of the library. The next, the edge of its zanpakuotu was pressed ever-so-gently into the throat of the Nanabantai-Fukutaichou. The shadow was behind him, silent, with only the beat of its heart giving sound to the night.

Then, as if both demon and man were one, the shadow spoke with a voice that was inhuman in every way.

“What happens to the killer when killed?”

Almost faster than his perception could process, the familiar touch of steel had cradled his rough neck, and consequently placed Ashton Arterius at the tip of death’s doorstep. However, a more prominent fact came to the forefront of the Shinigami’s mind, his intuition proved correct. A tingle of excitement shot down the warrior’s chiseled chest, and not of particle of fear lurked within that sensation. The tickle of death failed to disrupt the redhead’s pretentious calm. Through the usual course of action for the scenario this dire, the warrior and the philosopher merged, and allowed a plethora of strategies, speculations, and sarcastic comebacks to surge into his mind like unadulterated electricity.

The enigmatic sentinent posed a rather elementary, yet multi-dimensional question. When one possessed an analytical membrane, inquiries discharged from a true anomalous specimen such as the aforementioned, were loaded with implications and processes. As if he were a human computer, the deceptive Shinigami sustained a total lack of movement, and allowed his brain to thoroughly process the most profitable physical and verbal response—and he reveled in it.

“Typically,” the Lieutenant’s mouth opened marginally with one word, entering a slight pause before utilizing his perpetually sarcastic larynx, “the protagonist is relieved of his duty, and the credits roll after an anti-climactic cliffhanger.” To Ashton, this was nothing more than a heavy-risk game of chess. The man was nothing less than intelligent, and by that nature, he was fully aware that his hilarity might projectile him into an early grave.

But with the risk, came prize. If the mysterious soul wasn’t a sadist, there was little profit to be had in Ashton’s assassination. Whatever the profit was in the attacker’s mind was an irregularity to be deciphered.

The shadow did not react to the jape. Its katana slowly slid away from Ashton’s throat, leaving a shallow cut that barely bled. Should the vice-captain take this chance to turn around, he’d see that the shadow was five meters away, its sword missing.

“This one has come to you to get a question answered/ Should a killer answer the question correctly, his goals will be achieved.”

It was then that the lights flickered off. Only the moonlight brought any sort of illumination to the darkness blanketing the bookshelves, and none of the windows focused on the shadow proper.

When the voice spoke again, there was just the barest sense of emotion lined within; indecipherable from all the rest. “Would a killer sin to save the world, or die for what is right?”

A soft and ignorable cut slithered down the lieutenant’s newly freed throat. The perplexing figure seemed to relent, and unleashed a cryptic, yet discernible stream of statements and inquiries. The grinning death god still hadn’t the slightest clue as to what the entity was; his movements contrasted and surpassed that of any sentient being he’d encountered or studied to date. However there was one fact that Ashton had pinpointed, the same fact that would be further exposed once his final question would groove into his ears: Nanabantai’s second-in-command was a useful prospect to him.

While intrigue glossed over the amber eyes of the disingenuous Shinigami, logic’s cold hard caution did not falter. Whatever benefit he wanted to extract from Ashton was ambiguous at best, but his question tugged at his ambition and inner ruthlessness like a jackpot. The Japanese male’s fair-skinned neck curved to the left, as he evaluated the new position of the unknown figure. As his Juunibantai-made implants allowed him complete access of the fading figure and his de-materialized armament, the fukutaichō scrapped his throat of audible sarcasm and dropped his left hand onto the hilt of his zanpakutō.

He fully allowed the mystical spirit’s words to seep into his very soul. For a moment, he gauged the usefulness of any future invests versus any and all he held at the current. Declining the need to turn the entirety of his body, Ashton’s curled lips began to respond to the riddle, “A killer embraces sin, and would do much more to save the populace. Death renders a killer useless; mute, but his previous actions will always sing.” While his grin remained present, his tone shared the seriousness of the nameless one, as well as his cryptic mannerism.

He doubted he had the capability to defeat the creature, and presently, his want to do so gradually compressed. The question itself, either represented opportunity or insanity, and he’d play the game and delve further into this puzzle.

It dropped down onto the book that Ashton had been reading with a soft plop. The syringe contained a blue fluid within it, one that brimmed with power. Sensing it yielded little results, and studying it would yield fewer.

“Then this one makes the offer. If the killer injects himself, he will begin his path down a fine line. If he does not inject himself, then his aspirations will become ruin on a certain night.”

The shadow moved through the darkness so stealthily, it almost didn’t exist at all. A flash of steel here or there seemingly betrayed its position, but soon that same flash happened on the opposite side of the room.

“The killer must not tell anyone that he has killed himself.” A cold blade tabbed the back of Ashton’s neck. “The killer must not tell anyone that he is walking a fine line.” The katana disappeared, and this time Ashton could hear a door opening in the background. “The killer must not tell anyone anything, for trust is the currency of this one, and without it all bridges lead to nowhere.”

And then the shadow was gone, proven as the lights turned back on in the library.

Evidently, the spiky-haired Shinigami’s response proved satisfactory to the haunting shadow. Oddly enough, the result of this chess game had materialized in the form of a syringe containing an exotic blue fluid. Those red highlighted eyes of Ashton’s identified the object through his heightened peripherals, and kept focus on his enticing intruder. Judging by the magnitude of vagueness within the seemingly male spirit’s dialogue, whatever was in this tube of liquid had the ability to alter his very existence. Fate looked upon the red-haired lieutenant, and whether or not it wielded a graceful smile or a malevolent grin was another detail that the soul reaper remained ignorant of.

He was fond of knowledge, control, power—and the liquid atop the opened book was nothing more than a gigantic leap of faith. Ashton said nothing, and allowed his thoughts to boil; let his options cook before he placed them upon his plate. The “gift-bearing” spirit proceeded with more ghastly movements, weighing the killer’s shoulders with its phrasing, highly influencing the ruthless soul’s thoughts and courses of actions beyond its knowledge. Logic had encouraged to lean on his Jūnibantai agents to have them examine and research whatever was in that enigmatic vial.

But there was too much risk, and too much loss. The ghostly figure aided its prospect to work through secrecy, which meant if Ashton planned to reap the benefits of this encounter, he’d have to assassinate any and all who studied the vial. They were valuable assets to his syndicate, and wiping them from history would take copious amounts of resources that he couldn’t afford to spare at the moment. That only left the grinning man with two plausible options: take the leap of faith, or disregard the visitor’s offer and continue his life. There was a reason why Ashton’s body was placed in this very library on the eerie night, and that was a detail that he was not uneducated of.

The library lights flickered on, and the foreign figure was nowhere to be seen. Silence, solitude and physical inactivity reigned in the library for minutes as the Shinigami stared forth at nothing with his thoughts in chaotic development.

Ashton’s softly calloused hands left the handle of his zanpakutō, and trailed upwards to grasp and safely pocket the syringe. The man quietly closed the encyclopedia in his hand, and properly installed it on the shelf. He continued to turn towards the exit, and for once, his emotionless eyes smiled with desire and enthusiasm, and his smirk mimicked the greatest clown. The death god’s feet pattered against the terrain with a brisk and indomitable walk. His optics remained activated and actively searched for any unwanted witnesses. If there were any liabilities present, they needed to be located and erased from existence. Trust was the currency in this exchange, and Ashton was determined to sustain wealth.

Injection.
