KATANAGATARI

Katanagatari is the name of Kariya's Zanpakutou. The origin of the name literally means "Tale of the Sword." Much like Kariya's personality, Katanagatari's appearance remains true to it's name as a living embodiment of the sword. The release call for Katanagatari's Shikai is "Susumu", literally translating to "advance." There is very little appearance change from the regular zanpakuto, aside from the rust on the blade, Katanagatari has no other changes. Katanagatari's spirit takes the form of an old man, dressed in a kimono carrying a massive scroll on his back and a wakizashi in his left pocket.

• 心渡 KOKOROWATARI | Kokorowatari (lit. Transient Heart) is a property of Katanagatari that essentially turns Kariya's force of will into a weaponized nullifying boundary. Kariya marks one individual as a foe in which he much duel to the death, the mark is detectable as a field of immense pressure emanating from Kariya, with an approximate radius of fifty meters (with up to a 25 meter differential, depending on the amount of spiritual pressure Kariya is releasing). The skill forces anyone incapable of resisting Kariya's spiritual pressure (read, anyone below Kariya's level of skill in spiritual pressure) to submit to the duel. During this period, the opponent is incapable of using anything other than their release abilities. The only ways to break Kokorowatari are to concede in defeat, or forcibly release oneself from it, if the other individual has greater spiritual affinity.

• 山切 YAMAGIRI | Yamagiri (lit. Mountainsplitter) is a technique in which gathers air particles around the blade and sends it forwards in a vacuum wave that aims to split something in half. It is strong enough to create an arc that can cut through buildings. Augmented with Kariya's strength, Yamagiri's cutting power is so intense that the transmission of kinetic force releasing from the slash creates a vacuum wave of fire that makes it visible to the naked eye.

• 咢刀 AGITO | Agito (lit. Startling Blade) is one of two multi-dimensional refractionary techniques in which Kariya can utilize. The technique literally allows Kariya to phase through a technique for less than a fraction of a second. Channeling spiritual energy into the blade's edge, Kariya's blade becomes so sharp that it can literally cut through the fabric of space-time at two specific intervals within meters of one another, allowing him to pass between these two areas and avoid anything in between. Because of the speed of the execution of this technique, Kariya's afterimage passes between two areas to give him the appearance of "phasing" through an object. The limitations of this technique are that it cannot penetrate through living beings. Meaning that if the dimensional fabrice between two spaces passes through a human, spirit, hollow or otherwise, the fabric will instantly reset itself.

• 千流 SENRYU | Senryu (lit. Thousand Ways) is the other multi-dimensional refractionary technique in which Kariya utilizes. A technique borne of Katanagatari's enhancement of Kariya's natural skill, it literally allows Kariya redirect the arc, acceleration, angle and number of his blade slashes by breaking the laws of physics within the the greatest possible span of his blade swing. For example, Kariya can create three concurrent arching blades close on the enemy from all sides to create a prison, allowing no chance for defense or evasion. It is actually bending the laws of physics to multiply its existence. It starts with a single slash, followed by two absolutely simultaneous, over-lapping arcs that disregard the concept of time and space, producing a slash attack that arrives from three different directions.
