Winter’s eyes opened and he shot up without a second thought. The world was spinning and he wanted to throw up, but he ignored that. First thing’s first was figuring out where he was; falling asleep and not knowing where he was something he was not fond of.
White walls greeted him. There was a window from which the thin beams of the morning sun snuck through. He noticed there was an IV drip in his arm, a blanket over his legs, and a bed underneath him.
He was in a hospital. Fuck.
Not skipping a beat, Winter swung his legs out from beneath the blanket and took his first few wobbly steps. He ripped the IV line from his arm, felt his stomach growl, and let out an exasperated sigh. Oddly enough, he could not recall why he was in the hospital, especially since he felt so full of energy.

Well, she made it home for the night, at least long enough to make up a half-lie. Supposedly a friend was in the hospital and she desperately wished to be by their side for as long as possible. That meant getting to cut classes and return back to his side early in the morning before the sunbeams could piece through the window. Of course, she herself was tired and kinda fell asleep watching him. Terrible! However the moment he woke up and attempted to kick his feet out from under the covers, she sprung up. Her eyes widened in horror as he ripped out the IV and let out an exasperated sigh. Of course, the one who wanted to sigh was Risa, yet she didn't know him very well, so...maybe this wasn't a normal thing for him.
"L-Look here mister, don't go around doing anything crazy, you're not super human you know! Just get back in that bed and let professionals do their job, okay?!" she decided to give the veteran a lecture, as in her mind, which was still that of a normal person's, he was being crazy reckless!
Though unlike how he saw her the night before, she was just an ordinary girl now. She was garbed in a loose sweater which hung off the side of her shoulders, exposing most of it, along with her collarbone. It extended down past her thighs and she wore a simply belt along the stomach area to add some definition to her form, as well as a safe place to keep Chappy. Her left hand was on her hip and her right hand was pointedly well pointing at him, in full out lecture mode. Her right foot tapped against the hospital floor, the sound of her flats making a distinct tap, tap, tap. At least her leggings were keeping her warm, not that the temperature in the hospital was bad, it was definitely adequate, if not ideal.
Ah, it was then it occurred to the strawberry blonde that she didn't even know his name. She'd clear her throat before that hand which was pointing had changed to a proper handshake gesture.

Winter had not noticed the girl, and he did not know how. That was the final straw that caused his survival instincts to kick in. The moment she said her name though he was on her. He grabbed her outstretched arm, yanked her forward, and then slammed her into the bed with his free arm. He covered her mouth with left and and mounted on top of her stomach. There was an odd pain coming from his right wrist, but he ignored it.
“What are you?” Winter asked, his voice cold. “And what are these demons that haunt me? If I lift my hand, don’t scream either. I don’t want to kill you, but you wouldn’t be the first or the last.”

Her mind was thinking about what next to scold the man with when her world was flipped upside down. It happened so quickly, yet all she knew was that she was on the bed, instead of the patient! Her eyes widened in horror as she looked up at the man whom threatened her. Was she dealing with a psychopath or something? She couldn't be sure but he'd instructed her not to scream once he uncovered her mouth and so she wouldn't. It was hard to be calm when you were flustered and scared.
"L-look, I-I understand you have questions, it's natural just...please...calm down and let me up. I'll...try and dumb this down for you." she pleaded. Her eyes were tearing up, she really was scared. It was one thing when she was in her Superheroine mode but when she was back in her human body, she was helpless.
Hopefully he wouldn't try to do anything stupid, all she needed was some room and she could explain things as best as possible.
"Also...there's a little container on the opposite side of my belt. Just open the little box and swallow the candy, that'll help you to understand."

For a moment, Winter wondered if he had been mistaken. Risa’s innocent reaction was as honest as it could get, and a quick look at her hands told him that they didn’t have the callouses needed to wield a sword. But in a world of demons and magic, logic was thrown out the window. Winter’s eye twitched as he remembered his entire unit being wiped out by the monster not so different than the one that this little girl killed in a single stroke.
“If you’re lying to me and this is poison, know I can kill you before it takes effect.” Winter covered her mouth again and used his other hand, letting go of her wrist, to get the container off of her belt. He held it into the light and narrowed his eyes, shook it and held it to his ear, and then finally popped it open and poured it on the bed beside Risa’s head.
To take some mysterious drug was a folly. Winter knew better. If it hadn’t been for the last twenty-four hours being so damned contradictory to how he normally was, he would have stopped himself from swallowing the pill.
The ache in Winter’s wrist was gone. The nausea in his stomach had faded away. Blinking his eyes, he looked around the room wildly, wondering why he was standing up and why he was staring at his half-naked body straddling the witch who had brought him to this hospital.
“What in the . . .,” Winter stopped himself when he looked down. Black robes, japanese from the look of it, replaced the thin hospital gown he had been wearing moments earlier. On his right hip was his sword, sheathed and slid into a thick white sash. “Risa, what did you--”
“What’s going on in here?!” The doctor yelled.
Winter’s eyes snapped up when the door was flung open. The balding man looked at Risa wildly and rushed over to her. “What’s going on in here? What are you doing with my patient? Nurse!”
More people rushed in, pulling Risa away from Winter’s lifeless body. One checked his pulse and went pale. “He’s . . .he’s dead, doctor!”
“What do mean dead, I’m right here!” Winter screamed. When he was ignored he reached out to grab the nurse’s shoulder. She turned and looked at him, eyes wide with confusion. She’s not looking at me, but through me.
In the blink of an eye, Winter had grabbed Risa by the throat again and forced her on the wall. Anger had poisoned his eyes, and his grip was noticeably tighter now. “What the fuck did you do to me, and how do I reverse it?!”

Risa was beginning to put together a mental profile about this man. He was paranoid to the core but yet he still trusted her for some reason. Was it the innocence within her blue eyes? Even as she tried to reply to him, his hand around her throat; her eyes reflected that innocence. All she could do was raise her hand to point towards his body. It had gone from lifeless to BOING in a few moments. The man, springing up like a bunny rabbit as the doctor's tried to investigate him.
"Everything is A-okay here Doc! I just uh, y'know...ghosts. Sorry!" it was his voice, well to the doctor's and staff but Winter and herself could clearly hear the female tone with all it's cartoony glory.
Yes, Chappy was now within Winter's body and once she waved the Doctor's off, insisting she was fine and a grown ass man, she'd calmly walk over to the two.
"I trust this isn't a thing pyon~ Older men putting young women into bondage, ooooh~" she teased.
Risa was admittedly too afraid considering the newfound strength and speed the man had in his own super hero mode, to be embarrassed. Instead, she'd pick her words very carefully.
"We're the same...and it's reversible. Don't...be...afraid..." she pleaded to him.
It was awkward for one newbie to be teaching another newbie. It's like Shinigami couldn't even stick around to teach their understudies before bitting the bullet!
"She's right pyon! I can teach you two lots but right now I can only turn one of you into a Shinigmai. You'll just have to take turns while I do my thing." the man-bunny crossed their arms and nodded like a sage.

Winter was conflicted. He let go of Risa and sharply inhaled. Had it not been for his training as a green beret, he would have screamed out of frustration. Instead he walked over to the bed, sat on it, and let his breath out in a sigh heavy with years of conflict.
Is this what I’ve become? Winter looked to Risa and then back to the ground. She’s just a kid. She probably is as confused by all as I am. Only difference is . . .
“Tell me everything, and don’t leave anything out,” he finally said, after minutes of sitting there in silence.

Well, looks like some sort of..."What am I doing" hit the man. Maybe the testosterone and adrenaline finally cooled down. Either way, she'd simply stuck near the wall for a brief moment. Now that she could breath properly, she finally walked over in front of him, albeit keeping a safer distance away than previously. He asked for her to explain everything and to not let any of the details slip, thus she motioned for Chappy to come over. She'd translate Risa's wild imagination into the truth of their world for him.
"We've been given an awesome power mister but with great power comes great responsibility. We have to use the power we've gained to fight the demons that you asked about. See that sword by your side, that's the tool we use to kill them. They're called um..."
immediately Chappy chimed in:
"Hollows!"
"Right, Hollows. They're the souls of humans whom die but can't pass on to the after life. The after life is known as..."
"Soul Society!" Chappy interjected happily.
"...Yeah, that. I've never been before but the woman who gave me these powers, she plunged her own sword through my chest. I guess that's how a Soul Reaper transfers their power to someone. Do you...remember the face of the person that gave you your power? Are they dead now too?" she asked.
This made Chappy sad, thus a grown man had the pout of a five year old.
Resisting the urge to snap a picture, she moved her left hand to comb through her hair, her mind was being pushed to its limits, just so she could educate this poor confused veteran on the spiritual world.
"Okay, are you at least past the fact that spirits and thus 'demons' are real? We have another job, we have to reap the souls of spirits lingering on our side, so they can go to Soul Society. If we don't, they'll turn into a monster just like the one we fought yesterday. So, kill bad spirits; known as Hollows. Reap the souls of good spirits to send them to the after life. Um, I know this one, it's called Konso; that's japanese for 'Soul Burial'. It sends the soul on their way, in fact...why don't we get you a quick example." she mused before ducking down and pulling the spirit of a little boy from under the hospital bed.
"Look at his chest, see the chain? Apparently we're not supposed to let this chain run out, otherwise they'll turn into Hollows and make our lives harder. When you want to reap a good soul, you withdraw your sword and gently hit heir forehead with the butt of your hilt. Uh...the sword, it has a name...Oh yeah, Zanpakuto in japanese. You can call it a Soul Slayer if you want though. Apparently that sword is apart of your very soul, so you fight with your soul on the line, every night...from now on. Any questions?"

“Too many to ask,” Winter replied.
He drew his sword in one fluid motion. It slid from the scabbard easily enough, which was good. That meant if he was ever attacked in this form he could defend himself and not worrying about the katana getting stuck. With one swipe through the air, which caused the boy to pale, Winter realized that it was unreasonably light. Or maybe I’m just stronger than normal, he mused. After all, the speed in which he had pinned Risa onto the wall was greater than that of any normal human.
“Reap souls, eh?” Winter repeated. He tapped the hilt of this zanpakutou on the boy’s forehead and watched as a blue light filled the room. When it finally petered out, a black butterfly rose from the ground and phased through the window.
Winter easily absorbed what he had been told. Had it not been for him seeing spirits and demons in his journey across the world things would have been different. But he had seen too much to not accept what Risa said.
Sheathing his sword, Winter looked at his body. His face was cold and untelling of what he thought. “What is that possessing me?”

Naturally she'd continue to analyze the man, observing his body language and gestures. The way he pulled the sword out was so smooth, it was like he was a pro already. Swift and easy, she wondered if this was second nature to him. With hard boiled instincts like that, who needed her explanations? She couldn't help but rest both her hands on her hip while the boy was sent on to Soul Society. The worse part about all this, was that he still had more questions! Though he had the decency to not bombard her with them, instead focusing on a simple question. Whom was in his body, well at least that was easy.
"Chappy's the name, I'm a Gikon; an artificial soul made by Shinigami to assist with their work, pyon!"
...see, simple. Risa turned her attention to Chappy for a moment as well, her lips parting to ask a question of her own.
"Besides my powers, this is all I've gotten from the woman who changed my world. I just want to know if this is a forever thing or if we'll be out of a job soon." after all, they were only mere substitutes.
The power which was given to them didn't even have a place to go back to in Risa's case. It only made her wonder about the man whom she could barely read emotion wise. Everything might have sounded simple but the big questions that he didn't ask were obviously plaguing her mind.
"Whom do we answer to? Is there more to this that we haven't caught on to?" actually that last part was the burning question on her subconscious.
So she figured she might as well ask!
"So um...about our...Zanpakuto. Is there something more to it, I mean...they seem the same to me." she admitted, clearly not recognizing any differences in the hilt, guard, or sheathe however, there definitely was and that was just aesthetic differences!

“From what you just said, I take it you don’t know what these shinigami are or where they come from,” Winter stated. “For all we know, we’re being watched right now. Monitored. We’re probably experiments.”
That idea caused his hands to ball into fists. There was a very real possibility that these shinigami had simply let his friends die to that hollow. Then again, that same shinigami died as well. Winter let the anger ooze out of him as he looked his original body up and down.
“I don’t know,” was his half-hearted reply to her question. “How do I get back into my body? I want to leave here. Now.”
