PERSONALITY
"Strike a match and I'll burn you to the ground."

Toppa's two traits that can be defined at face value are unflinching optimism and an unyielding, animalistic charisma that can be traced to the absolute core of her being. Toppa is aggressive, stubborn, emotionally charged and possesses a smile that burns like magnesium against a bunsen burner. An emotional thinker, Toppa lacks the compatibility to think rationally in terms of planning and strategic organization which is the main factor in her inhibited growth in positions, despite her raw natural talent for the shinigami art skills.

While she lacks a sense of refinement in her manners, Toppa is a good person at heart. She does not mind being ribbed, and does not hold back on laughing at other people. She is in essence, the personification of a tomboy. She has never particularly understood the intricacies of female coordination and finesse, much to the dismay of her mother. She is an avid lover of physical activity and sportsmanship. As hobbies, Toppa is very in tune with the human world, having practiced electric guitar as a hobby since the early 1970's. She is an avid lover of Rock, Metal and all offsprings of aggressive high paced musical genres which utilize electric guitars. When not under duty in Shinigami care, Toppa loves any kind of physical sport or extreme rush that does not come from directly harming her body.Toppa pays extraneous attention to her physical health and fitness.

In terms of Toppa's sexuality, Toppa is pansexual, preferring neither gender nor race as limiting factors to romance. She adopts a very open stance on sexual relations, but does not seek any form of emotional attachment, which ultimately causes her to be selective to her partners. Lacking any form of mentorship emotionally towards relations with others, Toppa generally just enjoys one night stands and hook ups with no strings attached, provided that the opposite party is not a douchebag. She dislikes individuals who attempt to show off.

Toppa is a great friend, showing loyalty and dedication to those that depend on her. She is intrusive and at times, irritating, not because she wants to simply poke her nose in another's business, but because she feels that she could resolve the issue for them. But despite this sense of dedication, Toppa is an irresponsible individual who has never understood the concept of failure and suffering the consequences, any failures she has had in the past had been buffered by the fact that her family has been well off.


HISTORY
"I guess I am what happens when you mix mommy issues with an atomic bomb." - Tengen Toppa to Jukan Hinaai

Tengen Toppa is the illegitimate granddaughter of the Captain Commander, Jukan Hinaai. While this fact has been kept secret from the most of Soul Society, it has nevertheless developed into much of her life regardless of what she wanted to do. Tengen Toppa is the daughter of Tengen Akira and Jukan Irie, as Tengen Akira was not born of nobility, and because Jukan Irie was not married to the man in question, Toppa was essentially considered to be illegitimate as nobility, and was outcasted. Toppa was subsequently raised by Tengen Akira and her father's side of the family, only occasionally being capable of meeting up with her mother and grandmother.

At a young age, Toppa inherited her grandmother's natural ability for all things soul and strength related. Possessing a spiritual presence that far outstrips anyone of the current generation and combining it with explosive physical athleticism, Toppa aspired towards seeking the path to her grandmother's victory. Being raised by her father, Toppa was never taught the delicacy and tact that an average girl had in their lifetimes, and instead took up hobbies and arts in which appealed towards her idol, her grandmother and from her father.

As a child, Toppa was well off. Due to the fact that the sotaichou was her grandmother, and that she had provided the family of Tengen with more than enough to live comfortably with Toppa around, Toppa lived a luxurious young life. The Tengen family loved Toppa as much as any famiy would, and therefore Toppa really couldn't complain about the way she was treated. However, this still did not ease the insecurities that were planted into Toppa's mind. "Why does mother not see us? Why does she not live with us? Why is it only money that flows through this household from grandmother?" This insecurity would eventually derive itself into a longing for a complete relationship. Toppa was popular, extremely attractive, high achieving and naturally skilled in almost every aspect of her life, yet she craved the attention of a loving mother and a complete family.

Toppa began attending Shinigami Academy at the age of seventy three. It quickly became apparent that while her physical capabilities as a Shinigami were beyond excellent, her mental aptitude for kidou and for teamwork and co-ordination were sorely lacking due to her emotional temperament. A profile evaluation of Tengen Toppa states:

"Ms. Tengen shows an unprecedented capability for raw physical power and possesses one of the greatest forms of spiritual affinity we have seen in over a millennium. However, it is precisely due to this excessive spiritual strength that inhibits the growth of Ms. Tengen's capabilities. Tengen Toppa's strength draws from an overbearing reliance on her natural borne abilities, which are exacerbated by her capability to draw from her emotions, but it is a double edged sword in the sense that kidou and coordination require a mind that reigns in control over one's mind and keep calm under stress, something that Tengen has demonstrated to fault often. It is a recommendation that recruit Tengen Toppa be transferred to the Eleventh Division."

Toppa's personal life has been a multitude of short term relationships that have often left her cynical of further relationships being successful. Toppa is attractive, and highly popular with men and women alike, but they tend to leave her when they realize that her capability to commit to a relationship is somewhat lacking. As a result of a long standing string of relationship break ups, Toppa has decided to keep herself as reserved emotionally as she can from a sexual relationship. While relationship wise Toppa has major struggles with finding any sense of bonds with, her life in general is incredibly fulfilling. Aside from her duties, Toppa's life is filled to the brim with activity and hobbies, friends and duties. 

For the first few years after her graduation, Toppa was placed in the eleventh division as it befit her duties. However, her field results within the eleventh division far surpassed those within the division, and so as soon as a chance for promotion into the first division was given, Toppa took it, if nothing more than to have a chance to speak with her family once in a while. Even if it was a slim chance, she would have more time to spend with her grandmother the closer her proximity. Despite overwhelming talent and results, Toppa's capabilities were ultimately hindered in terms of strategy and teamwork. A description of Toppa in fieldwork states:

"She was more like a force of nature than a living spiritual being. We did not intervene, we did not have to. Tengen Toppa was a living force that obliterated anything in our path, like the deadliest vortex that barely registered itself as a consciousness."

Due to this, her superior officers deemed Toppa as emotionally immature enough to proceed further in training, except with the possibility of claiming the Kenpachi position. Toppa has spent the last fifty years of her life simply staying at her position. Toppa is happy with this position, due to the fact that she does not have to work extensively hard, and has enough to live more than comfortably by her own standards. 

To summarize, Tengen Toppa is an exceptional Shinigami with incredible potential that is only hindered by an emotional instability caused by a lack of security as a child. While she has issues with her mother's side of the family, she still paradoxically loves them with a desire to be recognized by them. Toppa is a duality between a confident, charismatic female that hides her desire to connect with others by a hypocritical sense of distrust in relationships due to the many failed attempts at connecting with others in her past. She currently spends her life in a comfortable position, neither wishing to move up or considering a change in pace.

Unfortunately, not all things go as planned.
