Kariya holds himself as one of the most dependable sources of authority within Seireitei. While still relatively young in term of spiritual age, the fifth division captain has nevertheless held his title of captaincy for over four hundred years of experience under his belt, and subsequently has grown into a wise man despite his youth.
As a person, Kariya is shrewd, steadfast and tends to observe the world with keen interest and a lack of judgment. He has a well developed sense of restraint and comprehension of social tact, but is not a social creature himself. Polite, professional, organized and devoted to both his family and to his job. He is ultimately a dependable individual who will always achieve the desired result. He holds his position with a keen mind, well developed leadership skills and the authority of being one of the strongest individuals to ever grace the history of Seireitei.
Kariya is ambiverted in nature, and is capable of both social and personal relationships with ease. Ryūgamine Kariya is a noble and one of the thirteen division captains in Soul Society. Fast tracking his academic scholarship from Shinigami Academy, Kariya was placed into First Division, fifth seat directly after graduation and worked there until his captaincy at the age of one hundred and thirty three.
Kariya was born into Eastern District 29, where he lived a stable life with little to no complications. He worked as an accountant to a bank firm after finishing primary and teritary education in a nearby college, and proceeded to work in Rukongai for the first century of his life. The only things that were notable about him at this point was a keen intellect and an immense spiritual pressure that came from him. As a side, he took up swordsmanship as a hobby, and became extremely proficient with the handling and philosophy of the blade.
Despite this, Kariya was relatively unnoticed until a nearby minor noble decided to host a tournament in his name. Deciding that it would be nice to grant his family additional funds, Kariya decided to participate in the tournament, and ended ranking first, heaving home a hefty pouch of gold coin. A few days later, he was approached by a shinigami recruiter who had been watching the tournament, asking for him to join the academy.
Although initially reluctant, citing reasons of staying with his family and an increased risk of danger from joining the Shinigami, he begrudgingly accepted his scholarship due to being informed that his vast spiritual pressure was a time bomb that was waiting to go off if he did not training it properly.
As a student, Kariya was called the greatest disciple out of the last three centuries. In a single year, he broke the century records for nearly every single category and achieved perfect results with his gradings. He impressed the Sanbantai Fukutaichou, Kunpuu Izumi, so much that she decided to put him on a fast track and led him directly into the First Division fifth seat after a single year of entering the academy.
Under first division, Kariya's performance was stellar, once again, achieving perfect results for all operations that he had led, or had been part of. Aside from taking scheduled leaves to meet his family whenever possible, Kariya's work ethic and mentality towards the Shinigami principle gave him the reputation of being both an ace and a reliable soldier.
Captain Commander Hinai took notice of Kariya's abilities, and at this point decided to personally mentor him, the tutelage was short, but it was at this time that Kariy rocketed from being barely captain level in skill to vastly overshoot the boundaries in which he was expected to obtain. Gaining experience and skills by learning from the best, Kariya's performance gained him numerous rewards as a war hero.
Upon the passing away of the Fifth Division captain, Kariya was positioned as the newly minted Fifth Division Captain, at the age of one hundred and thirty three. Kariya was a key factor in the success of countless operations against the Hollow over his time as a captaincy, he was also the head of an initiative for enforcing and providing basic water and hygiene standards for the outer districts of Rukongai. Irrespective of his natural abilities, Kariya was a tactician, an economist and a leader. In the last decade of peace that had been won through the Captain Commander's efforts, Kariya finally had a chance to settle into a less hectic routine. He married at the age of five hundred and six.
