APPEARANCE

A modern take on the standard Shinigami vestment, Yuu's attire consists of a tailored white dress shirt and slim-fitting black slacks, often accompanied by a set of distinctive black suspenders. He rarely wears his haori outside of official duties, but when he does it is draped loosely over his shoulders. Though the outfit appears relatively ordinary, its individual components are of exceptional quality.

PERSONALITY

In his public persona, Yuu is polite, charismatic, intellectual and easy-going. A well-respected and capable leader, Yuu is extremely perceptive and often uses his insight to comfort and reassure his subordinates. He is rarely surprised and almost never visibly alarmed, preferring to remain calm and analyze the situation when confronted with unforseen circumstances.

In truth, this affable facade disguises Yuu's truly dangerous, scheming nature. Ruthless and cunning, he will not hesitate to use manipulation and treachery to achieve his ends. Yuu purposefully maintains an air of mystery about himself, often speaking half-truths and employing misdirection while he carries out his schemes in secret.

On the battlefield, Yuu's duplicitous nature is exacerbated. There, the same perception and insight so effectively used to assuage his allies is transformed into a deadly weapon with which to analyze and provoke his enemies. Yuu's ability to manipulate his opponents into creating openings is nearly unmatched, even if -- and perhaps especially when -- his own physical strength is outclassed.

HISTORY

While many of the specifics of Yuu's past within Soul Society have been lost, or carefully obscured over time, a select few are able to recall that he once served as Commander of the Kidoshu. After a successful career at the head of the clandestine organization, Yuu elected to resign his position and became the first and only Shinigami to ever join the ranks of the Central 46.

He has since assumed his current position as captain of the 2nd division.

GREAT SPIRITUAL POWER
As one of the oldest members of the Gotei 13, as well as a former Kidoshu commander, Yuu possesses captain-level reiatsu. His spiritual power is uncharacteristically low for someone of his age and experience, however, being nearly equivalent to a low-level or newly promoted captain.

SKILLS

WEAPONS USE EXPERT
Despite his apparent reliance on Kido, Yuu has placed considerable emphasis on his expertise in Zanjutsu. Highly proficient in numerous styles of swordplay, he is more than capable of anticipating and adapting to numerous opponents' attacks simultaneously while creating and exploiting openings himself.

HAND-TO-HAND PRACTITIONER
With his relatively low physical strength and endurance, Yuu prefers to avoid hand-to-hand combat. As such, he has only learned the basics of Hakuda, mostly for defensive purposes.

AGILITY EXPERT
While not as proficient as those who specialize in Hoho, Yuu is a competent and capable practitioner. His Shunpo in particular has been refined to be virtually silent, allowing him to catch unsuspecting opponents off-guard, even if they are technically faster.

PERFECTED SPIRITUAL CONTROL
Even amongst members of the Kidoshu, Yuu's knowledge of the Demon Arts is unparalleled. A pioneer in his field, he is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Kido practitioners in the history of Soul Society, with particular regard held for his expertise in defensive barrier and seal-based Kido. Yuu is capable of using the highest levels of Kido at full power with complete control, and has demonstrated the ability to enhance numbered Kido spells to feats well beyond their known limits, even without an incantation.

Beyond Kido, Yuu utilizes his mastery of spiritual control to effectively mask his spiritual power, suppressing it to levels undetectable by all but the most spiritually aware.

MASTERED PERCEPTION
Naturally observant and insightful, Yuu has spent centuries tempering his raw talent into a formidable combat instinct that enables him to quickly analyze and discern the mechanics of almost any ability -- often times after seeing it just once. Yuu is capable of 'reading' the flow of reiryoku in his opponents' bodies, akin to glimpsing a shift in weight prior to a strike. This additional sense allows Yuu to accurately predict his enemy's movements and position himself accordingly in advance.

MASTER MANIPULATOR
Yuu's flair for manipulation is perhaps one of his most dangerous skills both on and off the battlefield. He is capable of provoking an emotional response from almost any opponent, often exploiting character flaws through banter in order to draw out an opening. Outside of combat, Yuu has demonstrated a similarly impressive ability to influence those around him, having convinced the Central 46 to appoint him as the first and only Shinigami representative in Soul Society's history.

ZANPAKUTO

KAMI NO HARI [DIVINE NEEDLE]
Kami no Hari resembles an ordinary katana without any identifying marks or defining characteristics. It is usually kept in a standard black sheath at Yuu's side.

SHIKAI
Kami no Hari's release phrase is "Barakeru" [Unravel]. It does not change in appearance upon its release.

SHIKAI SPECIAL ABILITY
Kami no Hari's special ability is "Mugen Kuugeki" [Infinite Aperture]. The sword's tip becomes capable of piercing the 'fabric' of space itself, temporarily creating a wormhole through which travel is possible. Yuu can use these portals to transport any matter, including himself, from one point in space to another. While this usually occurs instantly, Yuu is capable of trapping matter in the 'space between space', allowing him to release it at a time and place of his choosing. Additionally, Yuu can use Mugen Kuugeki to hold his body in a state of perpetual spatial displacement, effectively granting himself a form of intangibility. While in this state, he is incapable of interacting with physical or spiritual matter, though the reverse is also true.

TECHNIQUES

BAKUDO [WAY OF BINDING]

#81. DANKU [SPLITTING VOID]
A high-level defensive Kido spell, Danku creates a translucent barrier in the form of a large rectangular wall. While this spell is normally capable of defending against Kido spells up to #89, Yuu's expertise and specialization in Bakudo enables his iteration to successfully defend against spells up to #98, as well as their unnumbered equivalents.

UNNUMBERED [~#92]. HANRYOKU [COUNTER FORCE]
Developed by Yuu himself, Hanryoku creates an invisible barrier around the target's body which lies dormant until triggered. Upon contact with an outside force, the barrier automatically activates, gathering the energy of the attack and redirecting it back at its source. This spell defends against almost any physical attack, as well as Kido spells up to #95 and their unnumbered equivalents.

UNNUMBERED [~#93]. OCHITA SENOU [FALLEN USURPER KING]
A high-level Kido seal used to immobilize an enemy using their own reiatsu. Applied to a single target through physical contact, or indiscriminately to a broad area, Ochita Senou causes any affected reiatsu to force itself inward on its source, creating an incapacitating sensation of weight and pressure on the target's body. The stronger the reiatsu of the afflicted target, the more potent the effect.

UNNUMBERED [FORBIDDEN]. SEIFUKU [SUBJUGATE]
A forbidden Kido technique which imbues an object with its user's 'will', temporarily granting the user complete control over the object. While capable of fully possessing spiritually weaker beings, the spell is not limited to animate objects and can be used to temporarily stunt a stronger opponent's Zanpakuto-based release or even assume control of their Kido.

HADO [WAY OF DESTRUCTION]

#90. KUROHITSUGI [BLACK COFFIN]
A high-level offensive Kido spell that envelops its target in a box of destructive black energy before brutally lascerating them from head to toe. Yuu has enhanced this spell to produce a powerful gravitational vortex prior to completing, making it exceptionally difficult to evade.

#96 [FORBIDDEN]. ITTOU KASOU [SINGLE BLADE CREMATION]
A forbidden offensive Kido technique which utilizes its user's own body as a catalyst, creating a massive pillar of destructive energy in the shape of a katana's tip.
