APPEARANCE Being a tiny bit shorter than her sister at 5’7’’, Chie still sees her height to be quite formidable. She can look most people in the eye without looking up, and those who deemed themselves special because they are much bigger get automatic flattery. While she would prefer having longer legs, she tends to show what she has even though; preferring to wear skirts and dresses if she can. She even has a skirted version of the standard shinigami garb, although she does not wear that on official occasions. Aside from that, she simply sticks to dark colours, black and grey contrasted with just a hint of white are her favourites. She can be seen in an atrociously striking yellow shirt sometimes, the meaning of that being a well-guarded mystery. Due to not being much into make-up and the like, she forsakes that almost completely, aside from the occasional eyeliner. In fact, she often looks as if she does not bother to care much about her appearance, given how chaotic her hair looks at times. But that’s just because she always lets it grow at least to shoulder length, with some longer strands, and does not bother combing it all the time. It is not easy to tame, so she keeps it just long enough to mostly keep her ears covered, simply because she deems them ugly. PERSONALITY Chie is a somewhat peculiar girl. She does know the value of doing her job properly and being polite and obedient to the right people, but at the same time, she does not pull any stops without something important occupying her time. Wasting an opportunity is something she swore to herself to never do again, so she can be very direct and assertive, if she wants something or someone. Boredom is her enemy, but so is laziness. However, she can only be found honing her skills or doing work in her off hours if she really can’t think of anything else. Instead, she tries to always have something to do, and dislikes it if she has to do overtime and the like to clean up the mistakes of others. Sure, if something really is the matter, she accepts that, but she can be very vocal about things at times. Still, she is a more sociable person, who gets along with people quickly and tends to joke around. Unless someone lies to her, because once she finds out about this, there is little stopping her slapping power. While she might be open to pretty much any idea that sounds fun, she deeply disdains being used by people without her consent, or being made a fool of. Chie does have a certain amount of pride, but not very aloof. While she will tell anyone willing to hear just how incredible she is, she doesn’t look down on people less fortunate or weaker than herself, although she is prone to order anyone to bring her a coffee. Nonetheless, her compassion does have borders. She isn’t too emphatic, and sometimes has trouble reading a situation. And while she is hesitant to kill anything not a hollow, she will do it if ordered, or if facing someone too stupid to give up. Stupidity by itself tends to aggravate her, actually. Last but not least, there is that peculiar thing about her and her own lies. Due to her zanpakutou, she never dares to outright lie. And if asked the same question three times, she has to answer, as silence would be too easy a way to get out of this. However, that is just outright lying. Living with this restriction for years upon years, she has learned how to lie without lying, to just pick her words carefully enough to make others believe certain things, without actually saying it. And she truly likes preying on those who deem her easy prey, just because she cannot lie.
HISTORY Later. That was the word Chie heard the most during her childhood. Not just by her parents, but even by herself. She would go and have fun later. Or, well, the kind of fun that could be had after finding a good man et cetera, et cetera. Being born into a family at court simply meant she had to adhere to code, but at least she had some sort of alternative, with her father being a librarian. Well, not really an alternative, as she could hardly get any kind of work for herself, but at least he trained her well enough to read and write what she was allowed to write, that was something. And once he noticed that she was learning quick, he gave her more complex things to learn, in order to increase her value. This was for her own good, at least in part, and Chie knew this. Being educated to be a smart, understanding wife was pretty much as good as it got back then and at least it meant she would eventually be able to live more freely in the end, even if it meant she could not play much with other children her age. But that was okay, as it all would be better later on. She was even praised as being a genius by her father, and later managed to impress a noble enough to be considered to become at least a mistress, and brought to his rather lavish mansion. She quickly befriended the staff, as her ‘husband’ to be would arrive later. He was a nice man, good enough to consider herself lucky, and she was looking forward to a peaceful life filled with pleasantries. The noble even kept on assuring her how much he loved her. And then, just two days before he, too, would return to his mansion, she was deprived of this future. A single misstep on the stairs, an unlucky fall, that was all it needed. There was little pain. She could have considered herself lucky to go by this quickly, but she did not. No, she cursed her fate, was not ready to go on. Her spirit stayed at the mansion, which should have been such a great part of her life. At first, she reveled in the thought of being missed, of at least some people feeling sad that she was gone now. It was touching, but she soon learned that it was shallow, the staff moved on rather quickly, turning her into but a side-note, into gossip. And even the noble who should have been her gateway to a future, found a new girl within weeks, allowing Chie to witness someone else gain everything that should have been hers. It was infuriating, and even though she was a spirit, she felt that tug in her chest, as if her heart would burst out of it in anger. And then, suddenly, a hand on her shoulder. To this day, she still remembers how surprised she had been for someone to actually be able to touch her, a feeling that had become alien to her. She only managed to half turn around, catch a glimpse of flowing black robes, before the soul burial hit her, took her consciousness away once more. When her consciousness returned, she suddenly found herself in a place she’d deem worthy of a history book, but not reality. It was some kind of old timey slum or so, and a confused Chie did what most people would do in that situation. She aimlessly ran away. Yet, at least for once, she got lucky, running into people not only kind enough to explain her everything, but also kind of adopt her. Sure, she had just graduated, but being thrown into such a world did a lot to remedy that. The Kusanagi were a small family, giving Chie a sister for the first time. At first, she did not really want to have much to do with her, as the new world frightened and at the same time angered her. After not having lived a fulfilling life, she was now supposedly stuck in some kind of weird slum. Who wouldn’t get mad about that? Yet, at the same time, she did not have any pressure, and a family she came to like, even if the whole situation felt absolutely weird. There was a childhood to be had, but everything fell apart when she, helping her father, got involved into a minor skirmish with a hollow. It was not much, but it revealed Makoto to be a retired shinigami – and seeing him use a kido got Chie to try those out herself afterwards. With a little guidance, she actually managed the simplest of things relatively fast, leading to her father secretly using his contacts to get her into the academy. However, he told neither daughter about it, so Chie did not get a chance to say farewell, before moving away to that ‘school’. Later, she was informed that her family was killed that day, denting her still somewhat fragile self-esteem even more. It took a few years in the academy – and a discovered further talent for the arts of the shinigami – to get her back on track. In the end, she was even able to use a zanpakuto relatively well, even though kido was still her strongest subject. Due to this, she was eventually drafted directly into the kidosho. There, the true learning begun, and old patterns resurfaced. Kido fascinated her thoroughly, and her talent meant that she did not need too long for the basics, and had more room for experimentation during further training. Being the rather exclusive club it is, Chie never really spent much time in other divisions, unlike some other Shinigamis. Instead, she focused fully on the demon arts, neglecting swordplay for a while. Her reputation as a talented genius went to her head in a way, and so spent more time fooling around than doing anything else, if she was not attempting to improve her skills. After all, she quickly surpassed at least some more senior members, but did not put much effort into rising up, as she had a reputation anyway. Yet, that was only because the Kidoshu was missing a certain person at that time, the one whose name she had heard often in the academy. The savant, the one who had broken records where they existed before, and established new ones. Actually, one of the first things she’d done after joining the corps was looking for this man, only to hear he had rejected the offer to join. That struck her oddly, of course, but she had no leads or anything, so she had just let it rest. One day, however, he returned. Well, technically it was not a return, but more an entry, yet some greeted him as if he had always at least supposed to be there. And he immediately stole all her thunder. Chie had never been a competitive person, just doing her best and succeeding was enough for her. Yet, this man was always better than her. Neither of them really sought out to get promotions or anything, but once those became the natural progression, everyone would obviously choose him over her. Was she envious? Not really. She didn’t become an idiot trying to sabotage him or anything, yet subconsciously, she begun to put more effort into things, to a lot more time to her practice and further refinement. Not that she overworked herself, though, she always stopped before she could become too stressed or burned out, but she had to become more extreme in other parts of her life, too. So when she worked more, then she had to find things that were even more fun to do in her free time, and so forth. Subconsciously, she also decided to invest more time into the exact same fields that mister perfect wasn’t as….well, perfect. She improved her swordskills, although less important to members of her corps, and sought ways to make it more valuable to the kido practice. She’d even learn the name of her sword, and accepted the obligations that came with that, in exchange for something more unique, distinguish herself from that man she never even sought out, really talked to on her own accord. Thus, it had been left to him. And one can’t really can work alongside others for a century and never talk to one another, so eventually; she got to know this man, easing her competitiveness somewhat. She still retained her slight focus on the blade as well, training to somehow fuse it with kido in a meaningful way. She did get a little irked when said man eventually became the leader of the corps and immediately made his little brother his second in command, something that simply struck her oddly. But then again, lil’ bro did not stay in that position long, eventually leaving for ‘personal reasons’ or something. Not that Chie believed it, but she gladly took the spot, when offered it. Or rather, she slapped the commander into a wall when he could not give her a convincing reason not to give it to her. That did the trick.
