HISTORY
Maxwell was born in Europe in the later 1700's where Science was merely a pipe dream of mad men who had dared to treat where men easily feared. He grew up in the house of a minor noble merchant whom had sold him off to a traveling industrialist from Asia. The man took Maxwell under his wing but allowed the boy to keep his name and taught him the ways of industry. The man was a tycoon of sorts where he saw profit in advancement of the human race and what they could accomplish. This enticed Maxwell's own visions of science and human ingenuity.
Maxwell's adoptive father set up his operation within the more rural areas of Europe, isolated near a small village where he used all his funds to create a small factory of sorts. The factory acted as a hub for new ideas where traveling industrialists like himself or scientists could pay for space and the facility to express their ideas. Maxwell began learning from each man that had set up residence in the factory. Within a short time he learned of the science arts, mathematics, and literature. It was not long before he was adding his own ideas to that of the men who wished to advance their own and increase profit.
Into his early twenties Maxwell had become an established and respected member of the staff that assisted in running the factory. In truth he was possibly the most promising researcher that cared little for funds and profit and more for what actual advancement could be attained in such a scenario. Through his studied he grew very adept as cultivating medicines from raw samples as well as extending the life of soon to expire cultures. He was broadening as a doctor and scientist with all the time he could muster. He grew up without a child like environment and only knew work from the day he was adopted.
The first part of his true life came to an unfortunate end however when the boundaries of human ingenuity were finally pushed too far. Maxwell and several other researchers were experimenting with a new type of energy source to help run the factory far more efficiently. The idea was to simply use naturally generated lightning to fully power dozens of massive machines. The technology however was too much for them to comprehend and the entire team including Maxwell's adoptive father was caught in an explosion. The entire factory was decimated and their years of work, destroyed.
What Maxwell thought was death was simply an invitation to a new life. When he awoke he was greeted by a young woman whom spoke his adoptive father's language. One he could comprehend thanks to his years of study, he often was to deal with foreigners. She was a... Shinigami? A god of death, guiding him to the afterlife. Given the care his father gave to him he was able to partake in the afterlife he would go to. A place where souls could rest easily until their reincarnation. Not one soul could select when they would reincarnate but until they do, they were welcomed to Soul Society.
It was in this... afterlife, that Maxwell learned that the world he came from was merely a joke. There were things here he couldn't believe but as well as the technology here seemed far under what he came from. Yet there were things he know were not possible without such advanced minds at work. He learned of the Soul Society's army, the Gotei Thirteen and their soldiers, the Shinigami. Their purpose was to guide souls to the afterlife, to this Soul Society. There was however a great adversary they faced, Hollows, the negative energy of poorly lived individuals.
It was not long until Maxwell discovered the source of any type of higher living came from the Sereitei. It was the city of the Shinigami where they lived and focused their patrols along with the closer areas of Rukongai. Maxwell discovered the source within the city of what he was yearning for. The Gotei Thirteen had a division that specialized in advancing the technology the Shinigami made use of. It was Maxwell's goal to be apart of such a beast and discover what he could. This is what lead to his training as a Shinigami.
The next part of his life involved entering the academy and discovering he had a gift for Kido given his intelligence. Performing Kido was akin to calculating a formula, it was simple measurements and control. After he discovered what Reiatsu and Reiryoku was it was a matter of proper channeling to perform his strikes. His first experience with a weapon came in these years, his Zanpakutou as it were. A weapon that crafted itself to the wielder and bonded to the spirit. It was a lot to take in but it didn't take him long to understand that it was far more than simply a sword. His adoptive father often spoke of Japanese Katana, this was clearly one.
On graduating from the academy, Maxwell was granted his internal wish and placed into division twelve with hope and promise that he could be a strong addition to the squad. It was sometime before he was even accepted into the ranks of the laboratories and even then he was barely more than someone to grab beakers and tools. And thus was his role until he earned himself a hand in actual projects. Thankfully he grew a strong understanding of his new life and adapted well with hopes to not climb the seats, but to climb the laboratory ranks.
Head researcher had a nice ring to it.
