HISTORY: “He was born a killer.” One could say to describe the lifestyle that En’ei had lived when he was growing up in the Rukongai. When he was conceived, he had claimed the life of his mother, due to his spiritual power levels being so high during the process of being born into the Soul Society. En’ei’s father had been a Shinigami who had left his wife when she was pregnant to join the Goteijūsantai, where he would lead a successful military life. Though, it was like he was trying to forget about her and the baby, since he had no longer mailed her, completely losing all forms of communication with her once he had joined the Shinōreijutsuin.
This would ultimately leave the boy all alone as a child, without anyone to watch over him or care for him . . . to a certain extent. He was given to a neighborhood orphan shortly after his birth, and that is where he spent his childhood. Unlike the other kids who he had been around, there was something special about En’ei, and only the adults in his life that paid close attention to him could really see it. When the boy had come around water, or any liquid within his general area, it would bend to the power of his spiritual strength and become obedient.
And, even when there was none present he increase the amount of moisture in the air while he slept as his reiatsu crept out— this lead to him having to get a room of his own so he didn’t cause the other kids things to become wet. Without much guidance in his life, like any other kid, he decided to go out on his own to make a living for himself, but he wasn’t really sure how to do it. This lead him to the darker side of the Rukongai where he lived, the underworld wasn’t a place for kids, but the youthful naïvetés had him thinking otherwise. It was here that he would be taken under the wing of the thugs of his Rukongai, most notably a man nicknamed Madake. Madake had been a hired swordsman for the thugs who assassinated anyone who had been in debt to them, or if they wanted to convince them to do things for their benefit.
Madake could see the power that dwelled within En’ei, thinking that he could help him bring it forth to its fullest potential so he could use it via the boy. Before he had picked up a sword, the boy had been traveling alongside Madake as he went on various missions, just watching out from a distance in case anything had gone wrong with a mission and he didn’t make it out alive. Fortunately, that was never the case, and with enough time between the boy and Madake, he had finally thought it was time for him to start carrying his weight around on missions. Anything about swordsmanship that Madake had taught him, the boy had picked up with relative ease, mastering stances, movements, and techniques.
The boy was undoubtedly a prodigy of the sword, and with just a few weeks under his belt, he was able to compete with Madake in playful duels, even able to pull off wins every now and then. Madake didn’t catch it, but all this time the boy was holding back his true power, for he felt that if he had released his strength he would kill his mentor. En’ei had known this because “he” had told him so, the man in the tengu mask from his dreams, who had always been drinking from his gourd of sake as he spoke to the boy. Of course, the boy had thought it was always just a reoccurring dream, nothing more nothing less, but he still believed that he possessed the power he said he did, as he thought back on his days in the orphanage.
One day, the boy had questioned the man who was within his dreams, asking who he was, and waiting actually giving the boy his name, he would respond with, “I am the thousand things that embrace this world.” Though the boy had no clue as to what the man could possibly mean. As the boy had gotten older, and more in tune with his inner strength, he had become able to go on missions on his own for the thugs of the Rukongai. On one of his missions, he had discovered that Madake was the one he had to assassinate. They thought that since the boy was better than him, there was no need to keep him alive with the secrets he had possessed, and despite being his mentor, he had cut him down in cold blood, taking his Zanpakutō as a prize.
The boy could feel the inner strength within him building up, leaking out more and more each and every day, building up to the point where he felt like it would consume him if he didn’t learn how to utilize those powers . . . but he was against turning toward the Shinigami for guidance, due to learning about what his father had done to his mother after he had joined. As En’ei had committed more crimes for the thugs, it had caught them the eye of the Goteijūsantai, sending a few foot-soldiers to check out what was going on. The thugs had agreed to pay triple what the they have been paying the boy if he was able to take out the soldiers that had come to put an end to their plans, and though he wasn’t trained to be as graceful as them, the boys pure talent had been more than enough to slay the Shinigami.
After this incident, the thugs had to split up into various parts of the Rukongai, and it had also put En’ei upon the run from the Goteijūsantai. It would consume many years of his life staying upon the run, slaying many Shinigami as time with on, but less and less as time went on so that the heat could die down as it had done so. The Goteijūsantai had never really known the face of the Shinigami slayer, but there were probably others just like him within the Rukongai, with more years in between and the growing power within him becoming more prominent he decided to swallow his pride and join the Shinōreijutsuin; to learn to control his power and to slay his father. He didn’t really care for the military lifestyle, all he wanted to do was eat up what the Shinigami could teach him and spit out the rest.
With a strong desire to learn, it hadn’t taken him long to grasp the arts of Kidō, Hohō, and Hakuda— his swordsmanship had already been that of a captain-level by this point in his life, thanks to the new teaching and techniques he had been taught. En’ei had been performing exceptionally well within the Academy, so much that his name was making it all the way back to the Goteijūsantai, where his father would learn about him. Upon graduation day from the Shinōreijutsuin, his father had decided to confront him when he was alone, telling him that he had known who he was and the power that had dwelled deep within him was the power of a legendary spirit whose power was on a completely different level. It was only natural that En’ei didn’t care about what he had to say, remembering his face from a photo collection that his mother had of him, blindly the boy charged him.
In defense, the father had drawn his sword to protect himself from the boys attack, but due to the overwhelming spiritual power the boy had, his attack had broken straight through his defenses and hit the father. With the boy’s father Zanpakutō broken, he would continue his assault, with the father pleading that the boy had stopped; he was releasing far too much reiatsu in his controlled blind rage against his father, all he wanted was his death. It was then that the Rokubantai Taichō, Koshitsu Sojiro, had stepped into our dispute after feeling my reiatsu growing to dangerous levels. He had knocked the boy unconscious, and then his father had bound him with Kidō.
It has been over 50 years since that day had occurred, and in that time the boy had honed all of his skills and control over the power that had swelled up deep within him. And, of course, he had learned to forgive his father who had retired from the Goteijūsantai due to his age and the injury he had received so long ago that still made the most basic things hard for him to do. The boy had changed and matured a lot over the years, not being nearly as violent or cold as he used to be, despite being taken under the Rokubantai Taichō’s wing.
