PERSONALITY: Justice personified, Maiko is someone who values her laws. Her conviction is steady and unmovable, though some deem her weak minded and naive because of it. The law is the law and there is no ways around breaking it. Anyone who breaks the law, or even skips around it, is an enemy that must be punished. She believes herself to be the Herald of Justice that will administer divine punishment onto those who see themselves as above the law. There is no one that the law doesn't apply to, even her fellow Shinigami. In this way she's not very prejudiced as everyone gets punished equally no matter if they're human, Shinigami, or Arrancar. Though twisted, in a sense, this also means that her favorite place is Sōkyoku Hill because of the execution history behind it. She sees herself as an executioner for the good of defending all that keeps the world free from chaos; laws.
Despite her strong views on laws and justice, she is actually quite naive. Her judgments of people are terrible unless they are backed by complete and total facts. If someone tells her that a person is evil, she won't believe it until she witnesses it with her own eyes. However, if they tell her that they have been to prison, or the Maggots Nest, then she will completely believe them and then distrust them as she should. Sometimes, because of her poor judgments, she is rather gullible and easily fooled. This is due to her inexperience when it comes to people as, as she worked her way through the ranks of the Shinigami, she was constantly made fun of for how gullible she was.
HISTORY: Waking up on the dirty grounds of the Rukongai was somewhat distasteful, but everyone has to have their journey start somewhere. Maiko woke up in a daze and wandered around the Rukon Districts, trying to find something to eat and drink. Thankfully for her, she was still in the earlier stages of the Rukon. District 7 of the Eastern Rukon, they had lots of drinking water though they were just lacking a bit when it came to food. She found an abandoned house that she slowly started renovating and it became her home. At this point in her life she was fairly active in her community, talking to everyone and just having a good time. She was free of the devastating lives of those who lived in the farther out districts, though that couldn't be all of the blame. Because she was still but a teenager, and somewhat stupid, she didn't realize the rules that everyone else did. She took a jug of water without asking or paying and she was punished for it. While it was happening she was legitimately confused as to why it was happening. Being pitied the shopkeeper explained about rules and the fact that you have to be punished if you break the rules. She was in complete and total awe with his explanation and carried it with her as she continued to grow. Eventually, however, she got bored and decided that she'd venture out to become a Shinigami.
She joined the academy and took to classes immediately. Her troubles started soon after, as she was someone who wasn't a very good book learner. Her talents were in the application parts of everything, though with encouragement from her teacher, eventually she became well versed in the written arts, as well. Because of her demeanor and appearance many considered her a prodigy as she progressed through the Academy. Truth be told she felt that she was pretty average, but still allowed the others to compliment her. She especially paid attention to the old laws of the Soul Society and everything about their ways of punishment. She was seen as rather weird because of it, though it was rather odd, but she didn't care. The subject matter was incredibly appealing to her and it made the academy that much more enjoyable for the young woman. It was during the beginning of her last year that she finally heard the enchanting voice of her partner within her asauchi.
It was a day that was pouring within the Soul Society, with no real reason as to why, but what was truly odd was how much Maiko enjoyed it. Everyone else lamented the circumstances except for the jovial woman. The voice echoed throughout her head, she heard it but didn't really seem to grasp the words that seemed to simply bounce around. Finally, after about an hour or so, the words slowly began to make sense vowel-by-vowel. They had their first conversation, where she was transported to her inner world with ruins on top of a huge mountain. The clouds seem to envelope them, then keep on passing through. A woman with a very revealing figure asked if she knew her name and why she was there, to which she couldn't truly answer. Eventually, after conversing, she finally whispered her name. That cold and dreary day was one of true development as she began to train her zanpakutō.
She graduated from her class not much more than a year later, before she joined the ranks of the Goteijūsantai. She joined the tenth squad and admired those above her greatly. She went on numerous missions with her squad mates, and climbed the ranks rather quickly. Behind the scenes she began to train even harder with her zanpakuto, no one knowing she had already mastered her Shikai. She advanced, way ahead of her life span, and achieved a rudimentary Bankai. She nestled herself at third seat under Captain Okewa and Vice-Captain Hatsumi. Maiko was happy with how her division was, how they all fit together like one great puzzle piece and was very content. But the last thirty days ruined everything for the young Shinigami. First, Hatsumi departed for the Human World in a frenzy and had never returned. Not so long after, their Captain was engaged in a battle with one of the Espada. She grieved heavily with her fellow squad members. It was a truly distressing predicament as they had no command. She knew what was going to happen before anyone else did, she knew that the Sōtaichō had either guessed or simply completely known about her Bankai, and that she'd approach her. She was allowed seven days to continue her grieving. Before long, as she had anticipated, the Sōtaichō had approached her and offered her a chance to become a Captain, so long as she could undergo the Captain Proficiency Test, and lead her squad through reborn ashes. She accepted and was recently pronounced the new Jūbantai Taichō.
