ISHIKAWA, SANO
“For all I know, I could still be asleep.”
Almost half a millennium has passed since he drew his first breath. He was born in the mortal realm as a human in what is known today as the country of Japan. It was a small village of sorts in which he was born, where everyone in the area knew each other well and the inhabitants considered each other family. Because of these ideals, he lived a rather pleasant life as he grew up. With many friends to play with and nothing to trouble him, the youth couldn't think life would get any better. It wouldn't get any better, however it would go downhill. The catalyst of this sudden turn showed up when he turned twelve. By this age, the boy discovered he had strange abilities. These abilities, unbeknownst to him at the time, was a product of his surprising abundance of spiritual energy.
Though they were meager abilities, the most present being the ability to interact with spirits, he decided to keep them hidden from those around him. He only hid them because he feared being labeled as a demon by his tribe. While the community was close-knit and cared for each other as a family, anyone they thought was a demon was executed, for they feared that no matter how long they knew the "oni," it would eventually turn on them and therefore could not be trusted. But just because he was trying to hide the abilities didn't mean he wouldn't try learning their limits. He would train his body day by day with the rest of the tribal youth, seeing slight increases in the abilities within him. Soon enough, his abnormally high spiritual energy would attract danger. During one of these sessions, the youth was attacked by a weak hollow.
Although he didn't realize it, the hollow only came after sensing his Reiatsu. He managed to barely defeat the hollow, returning home all bruised up with the excuse that he fell out of a tree. From that day he began to fight more of the weak hollows that came to his village, both to protect it and to strengthen himself. Amidst this journey of self-improvement, he found himself falling in love. Her name was Hisae, a young native girl who was called upon to patch him up whenever he came back injured. The two would build a friendship that grew stronger and stronger over the years, and by the time he was sixteen, they reached a point where he felt ready to propose. But that's when things fell apart. One snowy day, Hisae was attacked by a hollow. Using his abilities, he fought hard to defeat the hollow, which was stronger than most he had faced already.
But his love would betray him, for she had panicked and went to the tribe leader about it before he even finished his battle. He returned to the tribe battered but victorious once more, only to be seized and lynched that same snowy day. As a plus, he could only mull over the events in the order that had transpired and wondered why things ended up like this. He protected them for so long, and he had even fought to save Hisae, yet they still decided he was something to be feared? He did nothing but stare into the sky as anger consumed him and caused his chain of fate to corrode almost as fast as it would if he were actually moving around. He eventually actually underwent hollowification and attacked his village, who did not recognize him in his transformed state and realized that they had made a mistake when they had him killed as they had no one to protect them. Regardless, in his new form as a creature of instinct, he began the slaughter of the villagers.
Midway through the onslaught a Shinigami intervened and slayed him. His soul returned to being a plus and he found himself unable to recall his past as a human once he awoke in Seireitei. The boy dwelt in Rukongai as a poverty-stricken soul who had to steal in order to survive. One thing he hadn't realized that his spiritual strength had stayed with him even as he passed on, and they continued to grow within Seireitei. Although homeless at first, he found himself adopted by a once famous martial arts teacher whose addiction to alcoholism caused his dojo to go out of business. In his old age, he realized that he had no true disciple to leave a legacy with and stumbled upon Sano around the same time. The boy would first touch on the development of his spiritual control and hakuda with this man, a man he would always remember as Old Man Sin. Even so, he had not completely beat his addiction and was pretty much a bum, leaving Sano to resort to theft in order to keep them both fed. Ironically, this started him on his path to becoming an expert in hohō.
Soon enough he discovered that his reiatsu was so strong and chilling that many of Rukongai's civilians found themselves freezing in his presence. It was not long before a shinigami took notice to his spiritual energy and directed him to the shinōreijutsuin, other wise known as the spiritual arts academy. He would not fight, deciding that he wanted to learn to master his spiritual so that he wouldn't endanger others with his Reiatsu anymore. However, his one stipulation for joining was that rations be sent to Sin since he would no longer be around to provide them. After a shorter than usual stint within the learning facility, the boy would become an unseated Shinigami of the Second Division. Upon receiving his zanpakutō he found himself feeling accomplished for the first time in his existence.
It would not belong before he learned his zanpakutō's name, as it had tried to tell him in his dreams even before he joined the spiritual arts academy. "Kiyoko" was eager to be known, and Sano couldn't imagine himself paired with a more suitable spirit. Releasing shikai for the first time made him realize that his placement in the Second Division might have been fate. You see, Kiyoko's weapon form ceases to exist in shikai, leaving Sano to have to compensate for it with either hakuda or kidō. As it stood back then and to this day, the Second Division was notorious for hakuda expertise and so it was easy for Sano to make his decision. While his time spent trying to master his spiritual control in the academy made him rather adept with it, to the point that he was easily one of the top in his class for kidō performance, he felt no qualm in turning a blind eye to the mastery of kidō. In fact, he preferred to utilize it in a similar fashion to what some know as shunkō and, as he began to develop his skills in hand-to-hand combat, Sano began pondering the various ways merge kidō with other fighting styles in a similar way.
His career as an unseated officer saw plenty of free time for him to train and experiment in hakuda and hohō until he felt he had comfortably mastered it. Soon afterwards he decided to dabble in kidō for awhile solely to help in the development of his own shunkō. In the end, he did manage to come up with some interesting tricks, though his training actually took him away from shunkō. He was the type of person to not try something he considered experimental during group missions until he had perfected it during training and successfully used it during a solo mission. This was simply because he did not want to endanger his comrades should the technique not work as it was intended. He would seek tutelage under Kunpuu Izumi, a veteran shinigami that was known for training highly ranked officers. Even though he was unseated, she decided to comply due to the potential she saw. As a result, no one knew of his discoveries in his journey to advance his hakuda save for her. This also lead to him gaining no real notice for just about a century until his first group mission after he felt that he finally mastered his hand-to-hand combat style.
The special forces noticed his skill, and he found himself recruited from an unseated position which many regard as a major achievement in its own right. He decided to join the Detention Unit, as he found the rules of the Maggot's Fen to be interesting and suitable for him to hone is hakuda even further. He would spend his time refining his body and seeing just how far he could push the limits of his spiritual control, and he found himself gaining more recognition just about a century into his career as a member of the Detention Unit. Although he had not even noticed just how far he had come, the former commander of the detention unit recognized him as his successor. While his set of skills were admirable, he didn't feel right claiming the position without having achieved bankai. Even with his new rank, one should not assume this meant the end of Sano's training nor his endeavors to advance the application of spiritual control to shinigami combat. It has been almost a decade, and his strength has yet to peak.
ALIAS, God Hand
AGE, 429 (Appears 24)
DATE OF BIRTH, February 18th
GENDER, Male
ALLEGIANCE, Seireitei
ORGANIZATION, Onmitsukidō
DIVISION, Detention Unit
POSITION, Commander
APPEARANCE,
HEIGHT: 5'11.
WEIGHT: 157 lbs.
EYE COLOR: Blue.
HAIR COLOR: Purple.
He is relatively youthful in appearance, and his most distinguishing feature would probably be his purple hair. His physique sports an average build that does not necessarily reflect his preference of hakuda until he removes his clothing. It is then that the scars and muscles he earned while honing his hand-to-hand skills are revealed, along with a strange tattoo lining his right arm. As a shinigami he tends toward the standard officer uniform. He does, however, have some tweaks to suit his fighting style and distinguish him amongst other shinigami. The shitagi underneath his kosode is sleeveless. This was done so that he could shed his kosode before using Shunkō so that he doesn't end up destroying the sleeves. A black hakama is worn on the lower body, matching the kosode while proving advantageous in combat by making leg movements less easily percieved. The hakama-himo that the youth wears as a belt for his hakama is tied with a side knot that makes it aesthetically unique in comparison to the hakama-himo of other Shinigami. He is also prone to wearing a white scarf, one that matches his hakama-himo.
PERSONALITY,
As skillful as he is, his personality tends to make him difficult to work with. He is very distant in nature, something he subconsciously carried into the next life due to the betrayal he suffered from in his past life. When this is combined with his dismissive and serious demeanor, his first impression generally presents him as an uptight asshole, especially if his sarcastic thoughts are voiced. This is a bit off from his actual persona, as beneath Sano's cold exterior is a light-hearted joker. This side of him is normally hidden until he gets to know a person as a defense against being seen as someone easily persuaded. He is known to be a blunt individual, getting straight to the point in serious situations and sometimes being untactful in the deliberation of his observations outside of battle. This has lead to him accidentally landing himself in many-a-fight, though he finds the sincere honesty to be a good trait. He is also a strong-willed individual, so he does tend to stand firmly in what he believes in even if he knows it isn't necessarily appropriate or correct. He has even shown himself as a bit pugnacious, as he will sometimes start arguments just for the sake of entertaining himself. But one thing he is well-known for is a dauntless nature that some regard as just insane. Even so, that is not to say he doesn't understand when he is outclassed or outmatched. It just means he understands things he should fear and why he should fear them, but resolves not to for the sake of not losing his head.
