The tea had gotten cold, Izumi noted. A sugar cube, damp and slowly breaking apart, floated across the surface without a care in the world. She sighed, pressed it down with her spoon, took a sip, and forced herself to swallow. Disgusting. How a tea shop could stay open serving cold tea, she didn’t know, but this place had somehow managed to do it.
Izumi sighed again and slid the cup to the end of the table. The other shinigami in the teahouse were enjoying themselves, it seemed, though she didn’t know how. She didn’t recognize any of the faces, which was a good thing. If she had taught any students stupid enough to come here, Izumi would have given up her license. But I’m drinking here. That reminder made her scowl.
The hour was half past noon and the times were supposedly peaceful. Shinigami still battled every day against hollow, but the skirmishes were growing less and less. Still, splinters of the Hohlreich had survived extinction, and many had invaded the Mortal Realm to hide and grow. A dusty map with crumbling edges sat on the table, and Izumi casually glanced over it. A pair of red and black magic markers held down one corner, and both had drawn multiple circles, dots, and lines in several different human countries.
A war meeting, if you could call it that, was what she wanted. Yoshiro wouldn’t be here, despite him heading the division dealing with first-response in the Mortal Realm. Out of the two, she was always the thinker. Kariya was different, though. He was a genius, and she had made sure that that genius had been nurtured well.
Taking another sip of tea, Izumi remembered how bad it was and set it back down. Hopefully Kariya would get here soon enough so that she’d be too distracted to take another drink.
