"Sensei is... missing?" A sense of sudden panic wracked Kariya's body. Did she decide to stay within the human world despite him requesting her to retreat. A sudden thought creeped against the back of his mind, "You could have killed that man... but you chose instead to retreat." No. No. No. No matter how he looked at it, that was in fact the best course of action.
If he prioritized himself as an asset, he would not risk expending his life against an unknown factor in nothing but a reconnaisance mission. The strange thing was... he was so absolutely certain that the vice-captain would have listened to his words. He forced these thoughts into the back of his mind however, as the Sotaichou began to do something severe at the current moment.
He had learned under her wing how absolutely unforgiving that the captain commander could be to those who disobeyed. He could understand this very well. Personally, Kariya never had any problems, because he excelled in pretty much any field of task that was given to him regardless of what it was.
Needless to say, there was a very good reason why discipline had to be established, when lives are at stake and you are asked to give your life to a greater cause, you have to be sure you are willing to take that risk in order to do so. As a captain, the duty is hundredfold, as the task of defending the entirety of Soul Society was in their hands, there was absolutely no reason for them to act out otherwise.
It was not Kariya's place to judge whether or not an action was considered right or wrong, but he knew that actions had consequences. Kariya briefly took a step from his position to address his former teacher. "Sotaichou, permission to speak." After her approval, Kariya would then begin his statement.
"While it is apparent that there are grave consequences for a lack of prioritization. And that there should be penalties for a lack of discipline, I believe it to be the best course of action to cause a punishment which does not directly injure one's chances in an upcoming battle against a force which eliminated ten million people.
While wounds such as ears and toes can be potentially restructured in the future, the mark that is left is also mentally traumatic to an individual, lowers morale and furthermore increases likelihood of disasters occurring in the midst of battle. If it is in our interest to combat these forces, we should not reduce the likelihood of our battle chances, no matter how small. A single captain may be the difference between the utter destruction of Soul Society." Kariya briefly looked towards the four accused.
"Even if their personalities are less than formal, their assets should not be harmed in the case of a future war."
